In this run-of-the-mill romantic comedy, a perpetual bridesmaid (Katherine Heigl) circles around a cynical journalist (James Marsden) who covers the wedding beat. Heigl anchors the film with her spazz-tastic charm, and the jokes hit about half the time. (K.J.)
28 Days

Keeping in mind that not every movie has to cure cancer, I mostly enjoyed 28 Days.

In this sequel to the 2002 zombie movie, a Special Forces sniper (Jeremy Renner) discovers that the rage virus has not completely died out. The film falls shy of classic status, but there are several hard-to-shake scenes. (M.S.)

3 Days to Kill
Released: 2014
Rated: PG-13

Hoping to rebuild his relationship with his daughter, a dying Secret Service agent (Kevin Costner) takes an experimental drug that could extend his life. Costner's performance is disappointingly laconic, but there's a wonderfully Hitchcockian kidnapping sequence executed with the precision of an expensive timepiece. (S.D.)

Rated: R

An enjoyable-enough remake of the 1957 Western about a poor cattle rancher (Christian Bale) who agrees to escort a sadistically charming outlaw (Russell Crowe) to prison in order to reclaim his self-respect. Crowe walks off with scene after scene. (K.W.)
3:10 To Yuma (1957)
Released: 1957
Rated:

Good suspense Western - vitiated by an absurd climax - which centers on the relationship between an incorruptible deputy and the charming psychopath he's bringing in for trial. "Wait till my boys catch up with us," the psychopath smiles, and meanwhile the clock keeps ticking toward 3:10...This, incidentally is one of the two films that were irritating Howard Hawks when he started to work on Rio Bravo. According to Hawks, Helfin should have replied to Glenn Ford: "You better pray your boys don't catch up with us. You'll be the first man killed."
30 Days of Night
Released: 2007
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
In this wild, often exhilarating vampire film, the stroke of genius is the setting: an Alaskan hamlet where night lasts a long time. Josh Hartnett plays the stoic neo-Western sheriff facing down the bad guys. (M.S.)
30 Minutes or Less
Released: 2011
Rated: R

In this action comedy, shiftless buddies (Danny McBride, Nick Swardson) strap a suicide vest to a pizza-delivery guy (Jesse Eisenberg) with instructions to rob a bank, or the vest will be remotely detonated. The relationships at the heart of the film are as unconvincing as the plot. (M.B.)

An adaptation of Frank Miller's blood-spurting graphic novel about the Spartan warriors who fought to the death against overwhelming odds in the Battle of Thermopylae. The film is a bit of a slog, but the battle sequences have a comic-book grandeur. (K.W.)

Based on Frank Millerâ??s blood-spurting graphic novel about the Spartan warriors who fought to the death against overwhelming odds in the Battle of Thermopylae, this film is a bit of a slog. But the battle sequences have a comic-book grandeur, and everythingâ??s so carefully composed that it starts to seem more like an art film. (K.W.)

A god (Rodrigo Santoro) and a vengeful Persian naval commander (Eva Green) pick a fight with the Greek army, whose leader (Sullivan Stapleton) must find an ally to have a shot at protecting his country. Though this is a spectacle full of shattered ships and duplicitous warcraft, old-school girl power keeps the story from feeling too heavy. (M.S.)

A pair of college roommates (Anamaria Marinca and Laura Vasiliu) endure a back-alley abortion in this quietly harrowing film set in late-Ceausescu Romania. Although the movie works beautifully on its own documentary-like terms, it deserves extra points for tackling the issue head-on rather than dancing around it, as so many recent American movies have done. (K.W.)
