Alex Cross
Released: 2012
Rated: PG-13

In this movie about James Patterson’s most famous protagonist, a Detroit cop (Tyler Perry) follows the trail of a deranged killer (Matthew Fox) targeting high-ranking officers of a finance company. What’s supposed to be a psychological thriller becomes a comedy of errors thanks to subpar acting and wild leaps of logic. (S.R.)

An 11-year-old (Ed Oxenbould) experiences one calamity after another in this adaptation of Judith Viorst's 1972 children's book. Concise writing, solid performances and inspired silliness make this the rare film that can be enjoyed by both kids and adults. (M.B.)
Alexander Hamilton
Released: 1931

Foundering along with the Founding Fathers. An early sound curio, one of many historical pageants with that unlikeliest of movie idols, George Arliss. (His wigs and beards and Plutarchian interests were later taken up with a vengeance by "Mr. Paul Muni.")(M.W.)
Alexander Nexsky
Released: 1938
Rated:

A surging majestic war film-based on Russia's repelling of a Mongolian invasion in the 13th century-that restored Sergei Eisenstein to favor with the Soviet leadership after his sojourn in the west. It's a great film in many ways, but perhaps the least personal and most conventional of all his projects; some of the sequences were shot by another director. Yet the film boasts one legendary action scene (the battle on the ice), and Sergei Prokofiev's brilliant accompanying music, with its dark, massive Russian sonorities, is one of a handful of original film scores regularly played in concert halls. At its best, this movie breaks through the turgid doctrinaire sensibilities that gripped Russian film-making during the Stalin years and sweeps you away.
Alexander the Great
Released: 1956
Rated:
Now Playing? No
A rarity: an historical epic from Hollywood in which spectacle and romance are subordinate to psychology and politics: with Burton's tragically scaled Alexander tormented by a massive Oedipus complex. Like all of Rossen's films, it's dark, slow and portentous-but it's also a welcome relief from the gauche excesses of a DeMille.

A little Universal Arabian Nights stuff, from the favorite director of John (Pink Flamingos) Waters. (I'm not kidding - that's what he says.)
Ali: Fear Eats The Soul
Released: 1974
Rated:

The plot of Sirk's All That Heaven Allows translated to modern Germany; the widow becomes a lumpy hausfrau, the gardener is now a Moroccan immigrant. Fassbinder loves Sirk, so he heaps many of the plot devices and confrontations intact - but his social criticism is even more scathing. Although the film sometimes seems oblique, it builds to a withering climax.

This 1949 film starring Ray Milland is a noir-style retelling of the Faust myth, in which a successful but unhappy man makes a pact with the Devil.

Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore
Released: 1975

The Westward odyssey of a middle-aged widow and her son - alternately funny, raw, violent, and tender. Fascinating direction by Martin Scorsese: He handles this soap opera plot as if it were an action thriller... and the wired-up pungency and pace he generates make the story twice as moving as it might be normally.
Alice in Wonderland
Released: 2010
Rated: PG

Tim Burton’s joyless 3D version is a rote tale of self-actualization as a 19-year-old Alice fights the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter). There are bright spots, including Johnny Depp’s Mad Hatter, but they’re undercut by the leaden, doomy production. (K.J.)
Alice In Wonderland (1933)

Most of Paramount's '30s contract players impersonate Lewis Carroll's dream-denizens. The fun is in the casting: W. C. Fields and Cary Grant, for example, are Humpty-Dumpty and the Mock Turtle

Teens and tweens use their skills, honed by hours of videogame play, to fight invading aliens. It's like a Nick at Night midweek movie that inadvertently got greenlighted for a big-screen opening. (M.S.)
