There's two transsexuals, a pregnant nun and a lesbian junkie, and the whole thing might start to seem like a Fellini circus on hormone therapy.
All About Steve
Released: 2009
Rated: PG-13
Now Playing? No
In this awful comedy, an eccentric with an almost perversely sunny outlook on life (Sandra Bullock) becomes obsessed with a news cameraman (Bradley Cooper). In the movie’s upside-down logic, Bullock’s pathological behavior is a rallying cry for anti-conformity. (K.J.)
All About the Benjamins
Released: 2002
Rated: R

All Good Things
Released: 2010
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
A wealthy real estate developer (Ryan Gosling) defies his father (Frank Langella) with his life choices and later is suspected in the disappearance of his wife (Kirstin Dunst). There's potential in the true-crime story, but the film is implausible. (K.B.)
All I Desire

The family that sobs together stays together. Small-town soap from Sirk at the beginning of his great '50s Universal period.
All In A Night's Work

-Shirley MacLaine- in the period when your reviewer was madly in love with her (he still is, in fact)-flees a dying millionaire's suite, bath-towel flapping and barefoot to the elbows. Inane complications ensue...
All Is Lost
Released: 2013
Rated: PG-13
Now Playing? No
A man (Robert Redford) must decide what to do when he accepts that he's lost at sea. There is little dialogue, but it's enthralling to watch Redford convey his character's resourcefulness physically. (S.R.)
All Mine to Give
Released: 1957
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Hardy pioneers brave the dairy wilds of Wisconsin before the Milwaukee Braves, before Pabst Blue Ribbon, before the Dow Riots, before Isthmus-hell, before almost anything. It's not as good as The Emigrants or The New Land.
All My Sons
Released: 1948
Rated:

Arthur Miller in an Ebsen mood: the guilty secrets of a family whose fortune was built on W.W.II double-dealing. Strident and stodgy adaptation.(M.W.)

All Over Me

All Quiet On The Western Front
Released: 1930
Rated:
Now Playing? No
A callow German recruit is swept up in the fervor of W.W.II. Gradually he sees the reality: the mud, the trenches, the misery, the death of all his friends and comrades. Fear and slaughter become omnipresent, compassion a flickering match in the darkness. Lewis Milestone's adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's novel (the dialogue director was the young George Cukor) is the most famous of a string of American antiwar movies of the early' 30s. The battle scenes have a furious energy and the intimate moments can still wrench you.

All That Heaven Allows
Released: 1955
Rated:
Now Playing? No
An attractive, fortyish widow in a stultifying bourgeois American suburb suddenly falls for a young gardener-he's poor, but he smiles sweetly and talks softly about his "silver-tipped spruce. The town-and her children-react with predictable vehemence. If you have any taste at all for full-blown soap opera, this is one of the masterpieces of the genre.
All That Jazz
Released: 1979
Rated: R

All the King's Men
Released: 2006
Rated: PG-13
Now Playing? No
Sean Penn's performance as a larger-than-life Louisiana demagogue is the only redeeming feature of this adaptation of Robert Penn Warren's novel, loosely based on the life of Huey Long. Writer-director Steve Zaillan fails to assemble his all-star cast into a unified whole. (M.B.)

All The King's Men
Released: 1949
Rated:

Robert Penn Warren's roman a clef about Huey Long's rise and fall, in a somber and vigorous adaptation. One of the best films about American politics--rough, penetrating and nervy. Robert Rossen, the man who made it, also made one of my favorite reflections on the craft of film directions: "Brains, hell. I know lots of brainy guys can't make a picture round the block."
All The Marbles
Released: 1981
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Breezily obscene attempt to get a sort of crossbred Rocky - Bad News Bears - Charlie's Angels hybrid out of women's wrestling. Good dumb fun at times - but Aldrich has had much better scripts.
All The President's Men
Released: 1976
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
One of the quintessential '70s paranoid thrillers, though it's based almost entirely on fact (Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein's account of their unraveling of the Watergate conspiracy). Pakula and cameraman Gordon Willis give it all a flat, cold, barren feel; they make Washington D. C. look like a lifeless hell.

All the Pretty Horses

On paper, it's magical, energetic and equestrian; on screen, it's plodding, unfocused and pedestrian.

A decent version the the Tad Mosel play, which is based, in turn, on James Agee's harrowing fictionalized account of his Tennessee boyhood, A Death In The Family.

Lightheaded, but very amusing little thriller about a horde of Ranyonesque lowlifes and gangsters who take on a Nazi Fifth Column. (M.W.)
