And The Ship Sails On
Released: 1984

A marvelous toy of a film, shot by Federico Fellini in emulation of the earliest silents. (At first we see a pastiche of those films, down to projector whirring and emulsion scratches; then modern color intrudes. But the camera style remains restricted and the settings consciously artificial, with rolling canvas waves and a paper moon.) The time is pre- World War I, the setting a luxury liner, crammed to the railings with the cream of European society (musical impresarios, divas, German aristocrats and militarists) and, on the deck, a crowd of Serbian refugees. This is, obviously, an allegorical passage: We are on yet another Ship of Fools. But Fellini imbues it all with his lyricism, his sense of the fantastical. It's a gorgeously eccentric film.
And Then There Were None
Released: 1945

Agatha Christie's often-filmed suspense classic about the 10 guests - all unconvicted murderers - on isolated Indian Island, who are being picked off one by one by someone among them. Best of the many versions, although it's played not for tension but for high, macabre comedy, by master French farceur Rene Clair.

Fetching Quakeress tames trigger-happy drifter. Pleasant Western, notable for two sidelights: Wayne's notorious off screen dalliance with Russell, and the sole directorial effort of his lifelong sycophant, screenwriter, drifting buddy and general bad influence, James Edward Grant.

Angel Face

Luc Besson’s ill-conceived mash note to Paris tells the story of a petty crook with the requisite lonely heart (Jamel Debbouze) and the ethereal beauty (Rie Rasmussen) who saves him from suicide. The sparkling black-and-white cinematography is gorgeous, but the film gets more gratingly ridiculous as it goes along. (M.S.)

In the Da Vinci Code sequel, the church calls in symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) for help when the pope's would-be replacements are kidnapped. The only thrills here come from two smartly rendered chase sequences. (K.J.)
