Mel Gibson serves up a heapinâ?? helpinâ?? of red meat in his story of peaceful 16th century hunter-gatherers who are kidnapped and prepped for human sacrifice. The movie is exciting, cutting from one chase to another, but you have to wonder what purpose all the explicit gore serves other than to entertain audiences primed for a pre-Cortés Rambo. (K.W.)
Apollo 18
Released: 2011
Rated: PG-13

The film purports to show found footage of a 1972 moon mission, where the astronauts slowly wake to befuddling tracks on the surface. It never amounts to all that much, but it’s still an intriguing fusion of period space-flight procedural and monster movie. (K.J)
Appaloosa

Rated: R

Ed Harris directed, produced, co-wrote the script and stars in this well-constructed Western about a pair of lawmen-for-hire (Harris and Viggo Mortensen) who almost let a woman (Renée Zellweger) come between them. The movie doesn't break any new ground or anything, but it's made with such quiet authority you wind up grateful it rode into town. (K.W.)

This adaptation of the Cartoon Network series is as ridiculous as its name, with a talking milkshake, a box of French fries and a ball of ground beef protecting a piece of exercise equipment with the power to destroy the earth. The plot is just a frame on which to hang a collection of absurdist non sequiturs, which, depending on your tastes, are either the stuff of comic genius or proof that the world has stopped making sense entirely. (J.R.)
Aquamarine

Arabesque

Another of Stanley Donen's Hitchcock pastiches. Brisk, tricky - not as good as his musicals.
Arbitrage

A hedge-fund magnate (Richard Gere) tries to sell his empire to a bank before his family and the NYPD discover he's a fraud. There's a surprisingly insightful character study at the heart of this suspenseful thriller. (S.R.)

Romance in W.W.II torn Paris; based on the novel by Erich Maria Remarque.(M.W.)
Arctic Tale

This well-shot look at a walrus and a polar bear is less a traditional documentary than a cuddly children's story, with narration by Queen Latifah. If it's sometimes a little too cute, bear in mind that the target audience is the post-Barney, pre-Bratz set. (M.S.)
Are We Done Yet?

A strange contractor (John C. McGinley) comes between newlyweds (Ice Cube, Nia Long) and their dream home. Everything is predictable here and nothing very funny. (M.B.)

After spoofing Marxism in Ninotchka screenwriters Brackett and Wilder turn their irreverent eyes to the Spanish Republican War. Bright, somewhat thin, the movie retains a historical interest.(M.W.)

Matt Dillon and Laurence Fishburne star in this serviceable heist movie about a perfectly planned caper gone wrong. There’s little new here, but that doesn’t mean the film is boring. (M.S.)

Army of Shadows

This 1969 French masterpiece is receiving its first stateside release with a new print struck for the occasion. It's a stark and unvarnished story about Resistance fighters in Vichy France in 1942-43, when the French leadership allowed the Nazis to occupy the country. (M.B.)
