A Delicate Balance
Released: 1973
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Staid, patrician Connecticut family, gently coming loose at the seams, is invaded by two neighbors who are beset by a nameless, all-consuming fear. The delicate balance "of sanity, civilization and friendship begins to totter. Albee's rather cold, absorbing, slightly Henry Jamesian psychodrama, acted as well as it could possibly be.

Raoul Walsh's last film, based on Paul Horgan's cavalry novel. If you had to pick somebody to sign out with, though, I doubt it'd be Troy Donahue.

A Double Life

A great Shakespearean actor, playing the driven, tragic Othello, finds the role seeping into his private life--all its jealousy, madness and murder. A taut, original thriller, with Colman's best performance as the Moor losing his moorings: but what makes the movie are all the canny, vivid glimpses of backstage theater life supplied by writers Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin and director George Cukor.

First of the Hardy Family series (derived in many ways, from the 1935 MGM adaptation of Eugene O'Neill's "memory" play, Ah, Wilderness!), with Barrymore in the patriarchal role later filled by Lewis Stone.
A Farewell To Arms
Released: 1957
Rated:
Now Playing? No
The second adaptation of Hemingway's tragic World War I romance (the first far less faithful, is a better movie) and the last film production of David O. Selznick. By now Selznick, obsessed with wife Jennifer Jones' career was driving all his subordinates (including the original director, John Huston, who was fired) to distraction as his attention to detail came near paranoia.

A Fine Madness

The crazed high jinx of an irrepressible Greenwich Village "poet." From the Elliot Baker novel; too frantic, too loud, but occasionally affecting. (M.W.)

After committing a diamond heist as a team, four extremely different individuals (John Cleese, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Kline, Michael Palin) try to seize the gems for themselves.
A Fistful of Dollars
Released: 1964
Rated: R

The first of Sergio Leone's "spaghetti Westerns" and the one which introduced Clint Eastwood as a nameless, cheroot-chewing serape clad, outlandishly deadly bounty hunter - the role that made him an international star. This movie's combination of amorality, macho humor, bloody violence and bravura camerawork startled audiences in the '60's, but actually the story is a direct steal from Kurosawa's samurai epic Yojimbo.
A Foreign Affair
Released: 1948
Rated:
Now Playing? No
One of Wilder's more cynical comedies - a scathing look at postwar Germany, with the corn fed, cock-eyed optimism of a congresswoman from Iowa running smack into Berlin's most decadent opportunism as exemplified by leggy Marlene, the "Cabaret Queen of the Black Market." As always with Wilder, the satiric pot shots are bull's-eyes, the background has the caricaturist brilliance of a Daumier, and the morality is uneasily fluid.
A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum
Released: 1966
Rated:

Plautus rerouted, as Richard Lester scrambles, fragments and kaleidoscopes the Gelbart-Sondheim musical, with its lewd, heavy winks at classic Roman farce, brisk and springy, also the last film appearance of the great Buster Keaton. (M.W.)
A Gathering Of Eagles
Released: 1963

A graphic designer (Charlie Sheen) plays out unusual fantasies in his head to cope with the departure of his longtime lover. It’s hard to tell what planet this movie is from, but apparently it’s one where dialogue is underwritten and line readings are painfully stilted. (K.B.)
A Good Day to Die Hard
Released: 2013

A cop (Bruce Willis) and his estranged son (Jai Courtney) must put aside their differences to prevent a nuclear-weapons heist in Moscow’s underworld. The cast is strong, but the plot has lots of convoluted twists. (L.B.)

A Good Old Fashioned Orgy
Released: 2011

This raunchy comedy about a wild party in the Hamptons has a strong cast, including Jason Sudeikis and Tyler Labine. Despite mediocre moments, it’s an amiably goofy riff on what it means to grow older in a youth-dominated culture. (M.S.)
