A budding 13-year-old writer (Saoirse Ronan) changes the course of several lives when she accuses the lover (James McAvoy) of her older sister (Keira Knightley) of a crime he didn’t commit. The film is not quite as brutalizing as Ian McEwan’s source novel, but it ravishes nonetheless in its grand exploration of the sins of the daughter and a lifetime spent making reparations. (K.J.)

Set in a London housing project, this smart, quick, funny alien-invasion film turns on the idea that its young hoodlum protagonists can also become the project’s protectors and heroes. Based on Norman Brooks play Fragile Fox, this is one of the most exciting of all the W.W.II movies. A commander of almost pathological cowardice - Captain Cooney, brilliantly portrayed by Eddie Albert, always falls apart under fire, and is a captain for no better reason than that his father is wealthy and politically well fixed. Opposing Cooney is a working-class G.I. named Costa, who bitterly informs his superior that if he plays the "gutless wonder" just one more time, he will come back and kill him. Costa isn't kidding. This movie will blast you right out of your seat.

The role that revived Rosalind Russell's career: the determinedly iconoclastic, upper-crust swinger of Patrick Dennis' "memoir." Transferred from the Broadway adaptation with much of the cast intact, and directed so archly (by Morton DaCosta) that it seems to be constantly digging you in the ribs and waggling its eyebrows.

The Land Down Under gets its very own Gone With the Wind with this historical romance about an English aristocrat (Nicole Kidman) who tries to save her million-acre ranch from an evil cattle baron with the help of a lonesome cowboy (Hugh Jackman). Fortunately, director Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge) has settled down a bit this time, kept the story front and center, but he's also brought his visionary power to bear on this satisfying throwback to the glorious epics of yesteryear. (K.W.)

A brilliant but self-absorbed concert pianist visits her daughter - who, in her humility and introversion, has been living a life of frustration and flayed agony for years. Ingmar Bergman wrote this film as a vehicle for his appropriately-named star, the great Ingrid after years of her entreaties. Perhaps her last film, it is a fitting, somber, poignant coda to her magnificent career.(M.W.)
