A Summer Place
Released: 1959
Rated:
Now Playing? No
A mind-boggling look at American sex and morals in the '50s, done with an alarmingly straight face; it may be one of the all-time classics of unconscious comedy. Among the howiers, the forced gynecological exam of Sandra Dee when she arrives home late from a date; Arthur Kennedy's drunken papa, who has a full cocktail glass even on a windswept mountain; any scene with Troy Donahue in his windbreaker; and a necking session where Troy and Sandy whisper the plot of King Kong while they grope. Watch this one for about 10 minutes; if you aren't laughing helplessly, give up, because you'll never be able to take it seriously.

Shelagh Delaney's beautifully written first play about a young unwed mother in Lancashire, and the gentle homosexual who cares for her - directed by Tony Richardson in an overheated style that goes elaborately wrong in almost every scene. But the acting is still fine.

A fast-talking Hollywood agent (Eddie Murphy) is hit with a curse that will kill him once he speaks a thousand words. The idea of Murphy, that famously motormouthed actor, suddenly tongue-tied is not a punchy enough punch line to carry a whole film, though it has a few interesting things to say about the path to inner peace. (K.J.)

Doomed love as Hitler's Berlin crumbles based on Erich Maria Remarque's novel. (Its title is A Time To Live and A Time To die). The young Jean-Luc Godard wrote: "It set my cheeks afire...This is what enchants me about Sirk; this delirious mixture of medieval and modern, sentimentality and subtlety, tame compositions and frenzied Cinemascope...controlled by what one must call the hand of a master. "

A Town Called Panic

In this whimsical stop-motion-animation film, a tiny toy cowboy, Indian and horse come alive and find themselves in all manner of goofy adventures. The film feels overlong, but the animation is superb, with a decidedly Belgian sense of the absurd. (M.S.)
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
Released: 1945

Elia Kazan's Hollywood directorial debut. Based on Betty Smith's touching memoir of tenement life, this is a fine, strong, sincere film. And the acting - as you would expect from anything directed by Kazan - is beautiful.

This toothless comedy pales in inventiveness compared to previous outings from the weed-smoking duo (John Cho and Kal Penn). Here, Harold’s plan for a respectable family Christmas is spoiled when Kumar shows up. (K.J.)

World War II character studies under fire. Brief, tense, pithy - as good in its way as Milestone's pacifist classic All Quiet On The Western Front.

A Walk On The Wild Side
Released: 1962

Vacuous adaptation of Nelson Algren, novel of New Orleans brothel life in the 1930's; it tries to be both tasteful and sordid, a dubious goal. Two saving graces: Saul Bass' great "prowling cat" title sequence, and one of those outrageously sexy ingenue performances which earned Jane Fonda the French title "La B.B. Americaine."
