In this inspired reworking of American history, Confederate vampires resist the Union army's musket balls, so the former Illinois rail-splitter staves in Nosferatu noggins left and right. It's a hoot, and the issues at play in the war between the states are never trivialized. (M.S.)

Accident
Released: 1967

Beneath a searing summer sun, along the banks of the Thames, and on the clipped lawns of Oxford guilt, lust, and fear unwind like a fat drowsy snake in search of prey. Based on Nicholas Moseley's novel - an ironic expose of the groves of academe - written by Pinter and directed by Losey in such a way that the most seemingly inconsequential moments reverberate with menace. A brilliant, odd, nervous, harrowing little film.

Ace In The Hole (The Big Carnival)
Released: 1951

The blackest thing Billy Wilder has ever done. It's about a corrupt journalist named Tatum, exiled to the boondocks of New Mexico, who stumbles on the Big Story: a miner trapped in a cave-in on the Indians' "sacred territory." Tatum decides to milk this scoop all the way to the big time. What follows is a series of exploitation's so depraved, so callous, so unfeeling and mercenary, that you can only shake your head sadly and say, "That's life." Ace In The Hole shows that Billy Wilder, stripped of his jokes and his charms, is a despairing misanthropist. It is his most revealing movie, and he calls it affectionately, "the runt of my litter." Spoken like a cynic, Billy...

Across The Pacific

An intrepid agent woos a hard-bitten femme and foils a cackling horde of Axis agents. Low-pressure, very enjoyable Maltese Falcon reunion vehicle; if the climax seems slapdash, it's because Huston, in a devilish mood, left for his army tour without having shot or scripted the last five minutes-with Bogey surrounded by armed Fascists and no escape possible. Vincent Sherman came in to supply the implausible mopup.

Attempting to capture the ‘60s, Julie Taymor uses Beatles songs to tell the story of a Liverpool lad (Jim Sturgess) who falls for an American teenager (Evan Rachel Wood). Taymor is great with visuals, less so with storytelling, but the music carries you through. (M.B.)

Active-duty Navy SEALs star in this thriller about a mission to rescue a hostage CIA analyst in Costa Rica. The battlefield verisimilitude is utterly engrossing, but the movie has little else to offer. (S.R.)
Action In The North Atlantic

Tremendously exciting W.W.II melodrama with tough dialogue and hair-raising special effects. The screenplay was by John Howard Lawson, who wound up as one of the "Hollywood Ten"-and , of course, this is one of the movies in which the postwar HUAC sessions unearthed lethal doses of Communist propaganda. Try to find it yourself between the submarine collisions and the destroyer raids.(M.W.)
