Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu takes three interrelated stories and shuffles them, and the result is a movie that seems both overdetermined and slightly underwritten. But the individual stories -- about an American couple (Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett), a Mexican American nanny (Adriana Barraza) and a deaf-mute Japanese girl (Rinko Kikuchi) -- are each powerful enough to justify movies of their own. (K.W.)
Babes In Arms
Released: 1939
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Not a good adaptation of the Broadway original, but Rooney, Garland and the intricately insane staging are compensation.(M.W.)
Babies
Released: 2010
Rated: PG
Now Playing? No
With no narration, this documentary focuses on four babies in Namibia, Mongolia, Tokyo and San Francisco, crosscutting to explore various stages in their development. The images are fantastic, though director Thomas Balmes’ larger point about babies is unclear. (M.B.)

Tina Fey stars as a single career woman who hires a surrogate (Amy Poehler) to have her baby. The topic is provocative, but the movie gums it to death. (K.W.)
Baby Sister
Released: 1983
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Sexy "baby sister" attempts to demolish her sibling's romance. Or, as Elvis once warned: "little sister, don't you do what your big sister done" (advice that should also apply to the filmmakers here).
Baby, It's You
Released: 1983
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Love cuts across class in the early '60s, as a Jewish-American Princess falls for a disreputable local hood from the Italian-American working class named "Sheik." (His idol is Frank Sinatra, and his nickname comes from a well-known prophylactic.) Tender, funny, humane; with a wonderful last scene. This is, by far, the best film of radical independent director John Sayles (Secaucus Seven, Lianna), and one of the best of the whole "rock-romance-reminiscence" cycle spawned by American Graffiti.
Baby, the Rain Must Fall
Released: 1965
Rated:
Now Playing? No
An excellent little film that tries for the poetic realism of the postwar Italian movies, and nearly succeeds. The subject: a mentally disturbed ex-convict, his patient wife, and their struggle to survive in a Texas Panhandle town.(M.W.)
Babylon A.D.
Released: 2008
Rated: PG-13
Now Playing? No
In an apocalyptic near-future, a big, semi-honorable lug (Vin Diesel) is contracted to smuggle a sexy Ukrainian nun/orphan (Melanie Thierry) from the Caucasus to New York City. Dumb but efficient late-summer entertainment. (M.S.)

The symbiosis of poverty and crime: a bleak social melodrama by William K. Howard; the director of The Power And The Glory.(M.W.)
Back From Eternity
Released: 1956
Rated:
Now Playing? No
The passenger plane's crash in uncharted jungles, and the desperate attempt to rebuild and fly it out. A remake of the original version of this oft-filmed plot, Five came Back (one of whose screenwriters was Nathaniel West), by its original director, John Farrow. As a kid, I loved it.
Back Street
Released: 1941
Rated:
Now Playing? No
The second version of Fanny Hurst's perennial soaper about noble mistresses and their lives in the shadows. Not bad. It's possible that Tim Holt owed his casting in The Magnificent Ambersons to his performance here.
Back To Bataan
Released: 1945
Rated:
Now Playing? No
If you ever had the perverse urge to see Duke Wayne in a movie written and directed by card-carrying Communists, here's your chance. But unless you're J. Parnell Thomas, you'll have a hard time telling it from Flying Tigers or The Fighting Seabees.
