MovieDescription
Black Book
Released: 2006
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
Paul Verhoeven takes your average World War II film and turns it on its head, portraying some of the Nazis as not half-bad and some of the Resistance leaders as less than half-good. The result is either a trivialization of what people went through or a giddy romp that captures the romance of a time when everything was up for grabs. (K.W.)

Black Christmas

In this surprisingly effective remake of the classic 1974 slasher film, sorority sisters begin dying one by one over Christmas break. The film isnâ??t as emotionally draining as its predecessor, but it fleshes out the charactersâ?? backstories while adding a healthy dose of black humor. (M.S.)

Welles again, as the sinister Italian magician Caglioiostro. The movie indulges it star's own passion for magic - which he has said exceeds his passion for cinema - and there's an added bonus; Welles directed (uncredited) all his own scenes.

Released: 2013
Rated: PG
Now Playing? No
A film based on Langston Hughes' play, in which a Baltimore teen (Jacob Latimore) travels to New York City to spend the holidays with his estranged relatives (Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett). This adaptation is too muddled to have much of an emotional impact. (S.D.)

Environmentalists accidentally unleash a mutant carnivorous sheep in this comedy/horror film.
Black Snake Moan

In this raunchy Southern tale, a God-fearing bluesman (Samuel L. Jackson) tries to heal a wild and troubled young woman (Christina Ricci). The film is deliberately outrageous and stereotypical, but director Craig Brewer and his actors invest these representations with everything they have. (M.B.)
Black Swan
Released: 2010

Tapped to play Swan Lake's Swan Queen, a ballerina (Natalie Portman) descends into madness. Director Darren Aronofsky mashes high art and low, classical and camp, for a sumptuously unnerving experience. (K.J.)

Blackmail
Released: 1929

Hitchcock's first sound film (actually, it was shot silent and later a sort of dubbed track, which the director considered laughable, was added to capitalize on the "Vitaphone" craze), a model thriller in which a woman kills her would-be seducer and falls into the clutches of a blackmailer. In it, we see Hitchcock creating his style - the inventive touches, the subjectivity, the shock effects and the sardonic wit.

Released: 2007
Rated: R

This is director Ridley Scott's last word on his much-reedited 1982 sci-fi classic about a cop (Harrison Ford) chasing replicants in futuristic L.A. The remastered and subtly rejiggered print is most notable for its inclusion of the "scene with the unicorn," which makes clear that Ford is indeed an android and not a human. (M.B.)

Blades of Glory
Released: 2007
Rated: PG-13

This figure-skating parody, starring Will Ferrell and Jon Heder as the sport's first same-sex pairs team, never quite lifts off the ice. The script doesn't delve into what makes these two tick, just sends them out on the ice in flamboyantly gaudy outfits. (K.W.)
