A good drama lurks somewhere in this true story of how the wines of northern California shattered France's oenological hauteur in a blind taste testing in 1976. But the film is flatfooted and plodding in all the places it should be swift and sparkling. (M.B.)

Think Annie Hall. Then think Annie Hall dealing with heart-rending tragedy.

Bound For Glory
Released: 1976
Rated:

Hal Ashby's superb biographical film on folksinger-activist Woody Guthrie is nearly as luminous a vision of Dust Bowl Depression America as The Grapes of Wrath almost 40 years earlier. The images have a wonderful dry glow (cinematographer Haskell Wexler paints the land with light) and cast and director capture something about the whole feel of the period: the urgency and the despair, the beauty of the land, the paralysis of the economy, the frustration, the promise. Like Guthrie, Ashby is consciously primitive, but he shines nonetheless.

Boy Meets Girl
Released: 1938

A spoof on the movies, which, especially with this cast, should have been crisp and bright; but which Lloyd Bacon turns into screaming, strident, forced farce. (M.W.)
Boy, Did I Get A Wrong Number
Released: 1966
Rated:

Geriatric jollity with Hope and Diller trading wheezy quips; also practically the last gasp of our old friend, the Late, Great George Marshall. (M.W.)

Rugged priest who "never met a boy he didn't like" has his mettle tested by a snarling young punk. Saccharine, despite its stars.

Bra Boys
Released: 2007
Rated: R

The Bra Boys surfing club is either a second family to dozens of wayward male souls from Maroubra, Australia’s impoverished housing projects or a gang of thugs ruling the beaches through violence and intimidation. Directed by club leader Sunny Abberton, this documentary comes down on the former side of the argument, making it a piece of propaganda—-albeit a soaring, exhilarating piece of propaganda. (J.R.)
Brainstorm
Released: 1983

That great gimmick from Fred Pohl's Plaque Of Pythons - the machine that lets one human experience another's sensations - in a scandal-tainted sci-fi movie (Natalie Wood drowned during shooting, with co-star Walken at the accident site). In the theaters, it was a masterpiece of special effects (courtesy of director Doug Trumbull): how it fares on the small screen is open to question.

Brand Upon the Brain!
Released: 2006
Rated: NR

Canada's Guy Maddin continues his lonely effort to keep the spirit of silent films alive with this very Grimm fairy tale about a man who returns to the lighthouse where he grew up and is caught in a hurricane of repressed memories about his crazy mother, his mad-scientist father and the orphanage they ran. Just as fascinating as the memories themselves is the way they bubble to the surface, the scratchy black-and-white images whirling past us like random-firing synapses. (K.W.)
Brass Unbound
Released: 1993
Rated: NR

Bratz
Released: 2007
Rated: PG

Based on the vulgar line of dolls, this live-action film finds a group of friends fighting against high school cliques. Bratz has a surprising amount of cinematic energy, though the obsession with clothes and consumer culture is no surprise at all. (M.B.)

In Pixar’s gorgeous animated feature, a free spirit in medieval Scotland (voiced by Kelly Macdonald) yearns to be a warrior against her mother’s advice. In the mother-daughter scenes, the film gets at the heart of something thorny and human. (S.R.)
