Brooklyn's Finest
Released: 2010
Rated: R

Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke and Don Cheadle play three stock policemen in a rundown Brooklyn precinct. The film is watchable, but the actors are let down by a cliché-ridden script. (M.B.)

High times at V.M.I., and forerunner perhaps, of Reagan's infatuation with the military.

Jim Sheridan's melodrama stars Tobey Maguire as a Marine shot down in Afghanistan, Jake Gyllenhaal as his black-sheep brother and Natalie Portman as his wife. All the actors do well enough, but they don’t mesh at all, and the film has no lived-in quality. (K.J.)

Brothers of the Head.
Released: 2006
Rated: R

An astonishing twinning of wild imagination and drop-dead realism, this poignant mockumentary profiles conjoined twins who end up fronting a â??70s glam-punk outfit. It feels more artistically, morally and spiritually honest than any dozen real documentaries youâ??d care to name. (M.S.)

Brubaker
Released: 0000

Robert Redford as a crusading warden at a corrupt Southern prison - loosely based on the experiences of Minnesota penologist Thomas Merton. Director Stuart Rosenberg is back in Cool Hand Luke territory; but after a grim, striking first 15 minutes, the movie sinks into a swamp of fuzzy good intentions, self righteous liberalism and black-and-white morality. (M.W.)

Jim Carrey plays a modern-day Job entrusted with God's powers
Bruno
Released: 2009
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
As in Borat, Sacha Baron Cohen takes the rampantly gay Bruno character around the country for a series of prankish encounters with puzzled Americans. The movie feels far less like a skewering of homophobia than an excuse to string together a series of jury-rigged sketches and encounters. (M.S.)
Brute Force
Released: 1947
Rated:
Now Playing? No
A sadistic, epicene wimp of a warden, with a taste for classical statuary and muscular inmates, drives a cellful of them into a desperate escape attempt. One of the paradigmatic prison break movies; arch, symbolic, preachy, super-theatrical - but full of shocks and thrills. (M.W.)
Bubba Ho-tep
Released: 2002
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
In this sweet, goofy lark, a mummified ancient Egyptian dude menaces Elvis (Bruce Campbell) and John F. Kennedy (Ossie Davis -- JFK has been dyed black by the CIA) at a convalescence home. There's not a whole lot to it on paper, but Campbell is deliciously invested in the Presleyan voiceover, and Davis is a deadpan delight. (M.I.)

Buck
Released: 2011
Rated: PG

Dan "Buck" Brannaman is a former abused child, as well as a natural horseman with an almost mystical connection to the equine mind. This documentary is short on cinematic magic, but it’s still a remarkable portrait of a survivor helping others – other species, actually – to survive on their own terms. (M.S.)
Buck and The Preacher
Released: 1972
Rated:

Sidney Poitier's directorial debut; an interesting variation on the classic "buddy-buddy" Western with a flamboyant performance by Belafonte as a seedy, ingenious hustler-preacher.

Bucky Larson: Born to be a Star
Released: 2011
Rated: R

Standup comedian Nick Swardson stars as an Iowa naif who resolves to become a Hollywood porn star. Swardson is deeply uncharismatic, and the film is a bore. (K.J.)

Billy Wilder runs his favorite odd couple through some odder paces, as a dour Mafia hit-man staked out to kill a government witness, and the hysterical suicide-next-door who keeps interrupting him. As cheerful and as pitiless as ever; sort of a Freudian homo erotic sex farce (without any sex) crossbred with film noir. (In fact, it might have played better in black-and-white.) Almost no one else liked this, but I did. (M.W.)
