A prissy pooch (voiced by Drew Barrymore) gets lost across the Mexican border, and a string of characters emerge to assist in her return to her L.A. makeup maven owner (Jamie Lee Curtis). If you are anywhere within whistling distance of adolescence, you’ll howl at this lowbrow, family-friendly trifle, a silly, if guilty, pleasure. (M.M.)

Beware! The Blob

Beyond The Forest
Released: 1949
Rated:
Now Playing? No
This is the movie which Edward Albee's "Martha" is trying drunkenly to remember at the opening of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?;" the one which contains Davis' legendary salvo, "What a dump!" An extremely lurid, intense melodrama done in Vidor's most fervent style, it focuses on Bette as a frustrated, amoral, small-town adulteress. The critics savaged it at the time - actually it's one of her best performances and films.
Beyond the Lights
Released: 2014
Rated: PG-13

A police officer (Nate Parker) gets caught up in the media circus surrounding a singer on the rise (Gugu Mbatha-Raw). The premise evokes melodramas like The Bodyguard, yet writer-director Gina Prince-Bythewood deftly presents a fairy tale grounded in something resembling reality. (W.G.)

More all-star disaster hokum from Irwin Allen, who contrives a way to keep the sunken ship afloat for a few more banal hours. Fortunately, he abandoned his originally announced notion for a sequel - to reunite the survivors of the first Poseidon accident, and involve them in another disaster.(M.W.)

The loves and tribulations of a beautiful Anglo-Indian woman during India's anti-colonial social upheavals. Based on the John Masters novel; censorship emasculated the script, but Cukor's re-creation of India is strange, sumptuous , and often stunning.

Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz play the Keane couple, the artists behind the craze of those ubiquitous portraits of wide-eyed waifs. Director Tim Burton has always had an eye for stylistically exaggerated period oddities, and this is supersaturated with Sixties detail that rivals even Mad Men. (M.S.)
