Nicholas Ray's superb melodrama about the overworked, gentle schoolteacher who begins taking cortisone and descends into raving paranoia - a paranoia that simply mirrors all the fears, perversities and bigotry's of his country and his time. The hair raising climax is reached when he decides to murder his own son in order to preserve him from evil, with Abraham's sacrifice of Isaac as his model. His desperate wife reminds him that God spared Isaac and the teacher, thunders, "God was wrong!" A great movie, and one of the key American films of the '50's; it brings back the nightmarish undercurrents of those years with jolting force.

This documentary on steroids is full of revelations, all brought to light by director Chris Bell’s good-natured, Michael Moore-lite dogging of athletes, health experts and government officials. Enhancement drugs, he learns, are everywhere – beta blockers for musicians with performance anxiety, even amphetamines for fighter pilots in the Air Force – making it hard to figure out where the line should be drawn.
