Cabin In The Sky

Rated: NR

An allegorical, all-black musical fantasy about a war in heaven over the soul of a reprobate crapshooter and womanizer. Rex Ingram balances his portrayal of "De Lawd" in Green Pastures by appearing here as Lucifer, Jr. Actually - since there's a little too much in the way of hymns and inspirational chatter from Ethel Waters, and since the Devil's allies include Satchmo, John Bubbles, young Lena Horne, and the entire Duke Ellington Orchestra (in its greatest period)-you may find yourself rooting for the Forces of Darkness.

Cactus Flower

Schlock Broadway comedy about a lovelorn dentist and his drilling problems. Goldie Hawn won an Oscar in her film debut; perhaps she'd done such a good job socking across her spaced-out ditzy blonde routine on :Laugh-in" that the voters were impressed she'd managed to remember her lines.

A look at Chess Records, the postwar Chicago record label that was home to Muddy Waters (Jeffrey Wright), Etta James (Beyoncé) and other greats. Dead on in nailing the spirit of the sounds that made Chicago such a blues melting pot. (M.B.)
Caesar And Cleopatra
Released: 1946
Rated:

George Bernard Shaw, a man who detested the movies, was somehow persuaded by the Hungarian entrepreneur Gabriel Pascal to sell him the rights for the plays. Shaw would consent to be filmed. The result was a good version of Pygmalion (by Leslie Howard and Anthony Asquith) and a decent one of Major Barbara (directed by Pascal himself). Emboldened, Pascal then undertook this project, which soon became the most expensive in the history of British cinema (as extravagant as the American Cleopatra decades later). Other than this notoriety, the cast and Shaw's lines (buried Pascal's sluggish direction)., it has nothing much to recommend it, and might better be consigned to a locked pyramid and a mean asp.
Caesar and Rosalie
Released: 1973
Rated:

Off trail, frequently startling romantic comedy; focusing on an insanely jealous, paternalistic husband and the odd adjustments he makes to his wife's infidelity. Original, sprightly, full of clever psychological insights; Montand has rarely been better.

Thrown together for a few days in Cairo, a Western fashion magazine editor (Patricia Clarkson) and a Muslim cafe owner (Alexander Siddig) develop feelings for each other. This fine, sad screen romance dares to take the yearnings of middle-aged people seriously. (K.B.)

The cracked, funny, desperate odyssey of two compulsive gamblers, who live in a world bounded by midnight and dawn, the shuffle of cards, the clacking of a roulette ball. Robert Altman takes a less paranoid view of gambling than usual: The characters are no less driven and self destructive, but the story is sweeter, looser, more amiable. It's an affable ballad of life on the ragged edge.
California Suite

A thin but very clever quartet of sex comedies by the master of the wisecrack, Neil Simon. In the best of the four, a frantic Walter Matthau - who has unknowingly had a hooker planted in his room - tries to conceal her from a slightly distracted Elaine May. (M.W.)
