A journalist (Maggie Gyllenhaal) takes a more-than-professional shine to an alcohol-basted country music has-been (Jeff Bridges). Bridges is searing and sorrowful in a film that feels intimate and immediate and as emotionally raw as every country song that ever mattered. (M.S.)
Crazy Horse

Rated: PG-13

Documentarian Frederick Wiseman dives deep into the perfectly sculpted, infinitely chic sensuality of the erotic attraction that is Paris' Crazy Horse saloon. It's a revealing look at an institution both familiar and utterly alien. (M.S.)

Crazy Love
Released: 2007
Rated: PG-13
Now Playing? No
This documentary adroitly metes out the bizarre details of a 30-year marriage cemented with a disfiguring attack. Lively, engrossing and briskly edited, it sincerely ponders the nature of love and of human need. (M.I.)
Crazy, Stupid, Love.

Rated: PG-13

After his wife (Julianne Moore) asks for a divorce, a guy (Steve Carell) is taken on as a Pygmalion project by a confident ladies' man (Ryan Gosling). The film offers up a terrific cast and some genuinely funny moments, but its attempt at sophistication is too often undercut by sit-com simplicity. (S.R.)

Crazylegs

UW Athletic Director Elroy "Crazylegs" Hirsch gives Tab Hunter a run for his money in this recounting of his own swivel-hipped gridiron exploits. Not a good movie, but definitely high camp for Madisonians. (M.W.)

Cries And Whispers

The plot and setting - a turn-of-the-century manor house - suggest Chekhov, but the handling is closer to Strindberg. A lacerating, emotionally wounding story of three sisters, one of whom is dying, all of whom are about to face the abyss of their own souls. A Bergman masterpiece and one of the most critically lauded films of his entire career (though, strangely, it's the one I've found hardest to warm up to). The interiors, lovingly shot by the omnipresent Sven Nykvist, are a symphony of shades of red, which Bergman describes as "the color of the human soul." The acting by Harriet Anderson, Liv Ullmann, Ingrid Thulin and Erland Josephson is beyond praise.
Crime And Passion
Released: 1976
Rated:

Romance-comedy thriller with an Alpine setting, about a larcenous couple tangled in their own intrigues. The film has no reputation, but the director is the brilliant Czech expatriate Ivan Passer (Intimate Lighting, Cutter's Way, Born To Win).

Crime Of Passion

Suffocating ambition, cruel love. Of Gerd Oswald's direction, Andrew Sarris reminds us that "a fluency of camera movement is controlled by sliding turns and harsh stops, befitting a cinema of bitter ambiguity."
