UW Athletic Director Elroy "Crazylegs" Hirsch gives Tab Hunter a run for his money in this recounting of his own swivel-hipped gridiron exploits. Not a good movie, but definitely high camp for Madisonians. (M.W.)

The plot and setting - a turn-of-the-century manor house - suggest Chekhov, but the handling is closer to Strindberg. A lacerating, emotionally wounding story of three sisters, one of whom is dying, all of whom are about to face the abyss of their own souls. A Bergman masterpiece and one of the most critically lauded films of his entire career (though, strangely, it's the one I've found hardest to warm up to). The interiors, lovingly shot by the omnipresent Sven Nykvist, are a symphony of shades of red, which Bergman describes as "the color of the human soul." The acting by Harriet Anderson, Liv Ullmann, Ingrid Thulin and Erland Josephson is beyond praise.

Suffocating ambition, cruel love. Of Gerd Oswald's direction, Andrew Sarris reminds us that "a fluency of camera movement is controlled by sliding turns and harsh stops, befitting a cinema of bitter ambiguity."
