Two sets of affluent New York parents confer after a brutal playground confrontation, and their meeting turns into a drunken screaming match. Roman Polanski doesn't quite hit his satirical mark, but this is an entertaining, darkly witty comedy of manners. (K.B.)
Carnal Knowledge

Two college buddies grow older, if not wiser, in a desperate search for the "eternal feminine." One is a dreamer, the other a cynic. Both of them are trapped in a vise of sexual clich©s and games - lust masquerading as love, gamesmanship as affection, fear as promiscuity. And the last turn of the screw, of course, is impotence, and the solitude that surrounds it. This is Jules Feiffer's brilliant satire on American sexual mores, with an absolutely spellbinding performance by Jack Nicholson as Jonathan, the cynic. Nicholson makes Jonathan by turns pathetic and monstrous, and his temper tantrum here--always one of his hallmarks--is such a virtuoso piece that it makes your hair stand on end.

Ference Molnar's Liliom, with its dashing carnival barker and tragic love affair, transplanted to an idyllic New England fishing town. It's a great musical; but the movie--despite some strong scenes and moment of charm--isn't quite up to it. Perhaps the producers erred when they forced out the original Billy Bigelow, Frank Sinatra, fearing he couldn't handle the show-stopper "Soliloquy".
