Mike Akel’s funny yet strangely moving fake documentary follows three teachers and a newly appointed assistant principal as they try to survive an academic year. The largely improvised performances are so pitch-perfect you’d swear it was the real thing, not a refreshingly gentle satire. (K.W.)
Champion
Released: 1949
Rated:
Now Playing? No
One of Douglas' best "heel" roles--an unscrupulous boxer who uses everyone around him in his furious climb to the top. But the movie is overrated; director Mark Robson himself considers it a fraudulent story and prefers his own later The Harder They Fall.
Chandni Chowk to China
Released: 2009
Rated: PG-13
Now Playing? No
A Bollywood film about a Delhi worker who finds a message from the gods in a potato. Like many in its genre, it’s a schizophrenic mess, albeit with well-choreographed musical numbers. (M.S.)
Changeling
Released: 2008
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
Taking his sweet time, as usual, Clint Eastwood directed this 1920s period piece about a Los Angeles single mom (Angelina Jolie) who gets put through the ringer for insisting that the boy returned to her by the LAPD is not her son, who mysteriously disappeared five months before. Jolie has never seemed more vulnerable, but the movie itself is a little cut and dried, a true-crime B-movie tricked out like an Oscar-bait A-movie. (K.W.)

In Changing Lanes, a car accident leads to an all-out war

Charley
Released: 1968
Rated:
Now Playing? No
An idiot named Charley Gordon is given chemical treatments that triple his IQ, opening for him a bright new world of intellect, dreams, even romance...Then, suddenly, the darkness starts closing in again. Sincere, moving; based on Daniel Keye's classic science-fiction tear-jerker Flowers for Algernon.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Tim Burton and Johnny Depp create a creepy wonderland in Roald Dahl's famous story
Charlie Bartlett

Anton Yelchin gives a dynamic performance in this comedy about a teen who gains popularity by selling prescription drugs to fellow students. But the direction is lax and the script soft, with more sap than snark. (M.B.)
Charlie Bubbles
Released: 1968
Rated:
Now Playing? No
The solonolent, troubled existence and delicate dreams of a British working-class novelist, brought face-to-face with his past and his life's waste. One of the few post-Taste Of Honey scripts by Lancashire's Shelagh Delaney, and the only directorial effort of Albert Finney--excellent on both counts.
Charlie Chan At The Opera

One of the best of this series. (M.W.)

Four great early Chaplins, The Cure, The Immigrant, Easy Street and The Adventurer (his entire 1917 output at Mutual, in fact), with a track of music and "cute" sound effects added later. Comedy masterpieces, in any setting. (M.W.)
Charlie St. Cloud

Rated: PG-13

Zac Efron does a serviceable job in this young-adult drama that blends fantasy, romance and weepies into an appealing package. Efron takes a caretaker’s job at a cemetery following his younger brother’s death. (M.B.)
Charlie Wilson's War

The real-life story of a playboy Congressman (Tom Hanks) who raised $1 billion with the help of a born-again socialite (Julia Roberts) to secretly fund Afghanistan's mujahideen in their fight against the Soviets in the early ‘80s. The film engagingly lays out the historical context, but it lacks the necessary sharp edges. (K.J.)

I'll leave it to you to decide whether this display of ballbusting T&A is empowering or exploitative.
