Alfonso Cuaron imagines a world where women have stopped having babies, the lack of a future having sunk England into a nightmare of surveillance and incarceration. Clive Owen plays a hero who sticks his neck out to save a woman who is miraculously pregnant, and the movie draws its power from the fact that, however far-fetched it all seems, it also seems entirely plausible. (K.W.)

Chimes At Midnight
Released: 1966
Rated:

Orson Welles' masterly compression of Shakespeare's three "Falstaff" plays, topped by his roistering, fleshly, infinitely touching incarnation of Sir John himself. Perhaps, even more than Citizen Kane, the masterpiece of his direction, and certainly one of the greatest and most intensely creative of all Shakespearean adaptations.
Chimpanzee
Released: 2012
Rated: G
Now Playing? No
This documentary excels as a super-immersive, visually breathtaking entrée into a world of chimps that’s little seen by humans. It’s cheapened, though, by Tim Allen’s jokey narration, which frames these animals as hairier humans. (K.J.)

Sam Rockwell is magnificently scuzzy in this movie version of Chuck Palahniuk’s gut-bucket novel, where he plays a sex addict who fakes the need for a Heimlich maneuver in restaurants so that people will hold him for a few moments and perhaps send cash later out of concern for his well-being. Angelica Huston plays the crazy-lady mom who may have screwed up his life forever, and writer-director Clark Gregg somehow gets all this madness and longing up there on the screen. (K.W.)

Christmas Holiday
Released: 1944
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Thoroughly bizarre film noir based on Somerset Maugham's novel, with Kelly and Durbin forsaking sweetness and light as a fugitive psychopath killer and his faithful wife. Mood-drenched, absorbing, one of Robert (Phantom Lady, The Killers) Slodmak's most fascinating movies. Definitely one of a kind.

The wildly, sublimely dysfunctional Vuillard famille gather for Christmas. This French film is a perfectly pitched telling of what happens when families get together -- how we are free to be our best and worst while in the company of those who have loved and loathed us most intimately. (K.J.)
