Another multimillion-dollar Hollywood mistake; a one joke comedy about a wimp-turned-pimp (a literature professor who frolics by night in the big -city underworld). Based on a script by Bruce Jay Friedman from which barely more than a line remains in the finished film. (M.W.)

Dodes-ka-den
Released: 1970
Rated:

Earlier in his career Kurosawa adapted Maxim Gorky's The Lower Depths. Here is his own version of the milieu: a lucid, piteous, terrifying look at a Toyko slum - its denizens, its victims, its prisoners, and the cycle of misery and humiliation in which they are trapped. Great, unflinching; a major work by one of the cinema's most brutally powerful artists.

The confrontation of innocent America and decadent Europe; the culture seekers and the elegant cons. Henry James' favorite theme, as refurbished by Sinclair Lewis - and with a brilliant portrayal of the average American extraordinary circumstances by Walter Huston.
Dog Day Afternoon

A hot summer day in New York - August 1972. Slow news. No action. Suddenly in Brooklyn, a pair of wildly inept bank robbers, one of whom is attempting to raise the money for his male lover's sex change operation - see the robbery blow up in their faces. Pinned down in the bank, they try to barter their way out by using the tellers and bank manager as hostages . in short order the robbery and kidnapping have become a citywide media event and the bank men themselves have been trapped in a grotesque carnival of death and comedy. Based on real events, and shot with withering humanity and intensity, this may be Sidney Lumet's best movie; its the sort of subject you don't think can work until you see it - and then you realize what rich material it really is. All the acting is excellent, and I'm especially fond of one scene; the sidewalk yelling match between Al Pacino as Sonny and Charles Durning as Officer Morelli.

Making it on Broadway. A period '40s piece, with a little slick period charm.
Dolphin Tale
Released: 2011
Rated: PG

After a boy (Nathan Gamble) finds a beached dolphin with no tail, a prosthetics technician (Morgan Freeman) tries to help it swim naturally again. The film allows time for quiet scenes that build relationships, and it maximizes the talents of its strong cast. (S.R.)
Dolphin Tale 2
Released: 2014
Rated: PG
Now Playing? Yes
The staff of a marine hospital (Harry Connick Jr., Morgan Freeman) must find a companion for the dolphin they worked so hard to save. The series' first film was an inspirational yarn about a troubled boy and his tailless dolphin in the vein of Flipper, but this follow-up and its characters are burdened by the responsibilities of adulthood. (W.G.)
Dolphin Tale 3D
Released: 2011
Rated: PG
Now Playing? No
A marine biologist (Harry Connick Jr.), a prosthetics designer (Morgan Freeman), and a devoted boy (Nathan Gamble) join forces to help an injured dolphin swim again. Though the film meanders through some chum-heavy patches, this crowd-pleaser is a worthy new entrant into the boy-and-his-underdog genre. (M.B.)
Dom Hemingway
Released: 2013

Out of prison and back on the streets of London after 12 years, a safe-cracking criminal (Jude Law) tries to collect the debts he's owed. If this film's narrative were even halfway coherent, it could succeed on Law’s performance alone. (J.K.)
Domestic Disturbance

Don Jon

A man known for his sexual conquests (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) seeks a more gratifying form of boot knocking after he becomes addicted to porn. There's a potentially worthwhile story about alienation, but it's wrapped in insulting packaging. (S.R.)
Don Quixote
Released: 1933
Rated:
Now Playing? No
The eternal cracked knight-errant of La Mancha and his eternal pudgy squire. Probably the most opulent and artistically satisfying of many adaptation of Cervants' great picaresque saga, with the exception of Kozintsey's great 1957 Russian version (and, also one would hope, the long unfinished film by Orson Welles - still incomplete, despite three decades and the death of both its stars.
