Don't Bother To Knock
Released: 1952

An average thriller, with one of Marilyn Monroe's more improbable roles; a crazed, suicidal hotel baby-sitter. Perhaps this view of "sex kittens" was an inevitable kink of early '50s sexual mores (they are evil or unstable or pathetic, they destroy children and families). But, a year later, Howard Hawks cast her to better advantage in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and the rest is history.

"If the world's round," as a little girl who is shortly to die, "why is frozen water flat?" "Nothing's what it seems, her father replies...and nothing at all is what it seems in this stunning horror thriller, based on a Daphne DuMaurier story, and shot on location in Venice in an errie style that belies the magnificence of the setting that suggests gorgeous views through a pane of frosted glass, or through a gray, threatening rain. The plot deals with death, precognition, ESP and voices "from beyond the grave," and the whole movie is dense with allusions and symbols. A really unsettling experience with an unforgettably shocking climax.

Donovan's Reef
Released: 1963

A romantic-comic variation on a theme that obsessed John Ford in his later years miscegenation and racial antagonism. On an idyllic South Sea isle, a staid, patrician Bostonian has her moral precepts flattened by her father, with his bevy of Polynesian offspring, and her dignity upended by a group of brawling ex-sailors. Ford at his most raffish; with the Kauai location sequences beautifully shot by Bill Clothier.

There’s nothing original in this tale of specialists battling a lethal virus in the future. But director Neil Marshall’s filmmaking is powerful stuff when it works, and it works more than you'd expect. (M.S.)
