Dead End
Released: 1937
Rated:
Now Playing? No
A fashionable penthouse on the East River adjoins a seething slum from which a horde of dirty wisecracking urchins periodically emerge to take a dip in the river and jeer at their "betters." This familiar crew (they were assembled for the Sidney Kingsley stage play in 1936 and stayed together, in one form or another, until the last Bowery Boys movie in the mid-'50's) became the top proletarian lowlifes of their era, and they inject a bacterial dose of liveliness amid malice into this polished Wyler-Goldwyn production. Actually, they began basically as "background"; Dead End is the chronicle of two ambitious lovers who dream of escaping the slums, and of a well-heeled but doomed gangster-- Bogey, natch - who's come back for a last look at the old neighborhood. The movie has that strange mixture of social idealism and cynical vigor which stamp it as unmistakably "thirties."

Dead Silence

A widower (Ryan Kwanten) returns to his hometown to search for answers to his wife's murder. While no horror masterpiece, itâ??s a kicky exercise in spook-show atmospherics that manages to hit all the right notes. (M.S.)

Deadfall

On leave from the Army, a reformed hooligan (Channing Tatum) falls for a saintly college student (Amanda Seyfried), then heads back overseas to finish his tour. After that, ill-defined and static-seeming stuff happens in this muzzy picture. (K.J.)

Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father

In 2001, 28-year-old Dr. Andrew Bagby is found dead in a park in Pennsylvania. He had been shot by his ex-girlfriend, who then fled to Canada, where she was able to walk free on bail, pregnant with Andrew's child. Andrew's enraged parents campaign to gain custody of the child and convict their son's killer. Filmmaker Kurt Kuenne pairs this story with home movies and interviews with those who knew Andrew, hoping to give his best friend's son an opportunity to discover who his dad was. (TMS)
Death at a Funeral

Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence and Tracy Morgan star in this comedy about a funeral gone cataclysmically wrong. It’s a slight but agreeable picture with strong performances. (K.J.)

A big dysfunctional family (Matthew Macfadyen, Rupert Graves, Jane Asher) falls apart at a funeral. It’s a good-old fashioned farce, smartly conceived and executed. (T.B.)

Death of a Gunfighter
Released: 1969

Death of a President
Released: 2006
Rated: R

British director Gabriel Range has performed an amazing act of media manipulation in this pseudo-documentary about the 2007 assassination of George W. Bush, melding real and fake news footage into an Orwellian vision of a country further ripped apart by war. The movie serves as a valuable reminder of how bad things could get â?? i.e., how bad they already are. (K.W.)
Death Race
Released: 2008
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
The concept of 1975's Death Race 2000 -- cars and drivers engaged in state-sanctioned slaughter -- is reduced to dull, gladiatorial combat streamed live via the Internet. The story of the original film is stripped of pointedly political social satire, making this one of the most boring drags of all time. (M.S.)
