Monty Clift was close to the end of his tether when Huston cast him as the great psychoanalyst; at times, he seems crazier than his patients. But the film, despite compromises and the mad glint in Clint's eye, is intelligent, and more adult than most movie biographies.

Less a remake of the original than a mash-up of elements from the first three films, this entry quickly gets Jason into his mask and thinning the 20-something herd. Director Marcus Nispel clearly understands why the franchise endures: At its core, it's less about terror than it is about comedy. (S.R.)

Anti-German bigotry in postwar Britain from problem-movie specialist Basil Dearden. (M.W.)

Friendly Persuasion
Released: 1956

A quaker farming family enacts its pleasant, pacific daily rituals in a bucolic rural landscape that might have been summoned up by Norman Rockwell. Suddenly, the Civil War intrudes, shattering all those rituals and confronting everyone with the imminence of death. Though it doesn't have the reputation of The Best Years Of Our Lives, Jezebel or Ben Hur, this is my favorite William Wyler film. His disciplined style works magical effects on the Jessamyn West story; for me the movie has the peculiar charm and beauty of a clockwork cršche, every part meshing perfectly. (In 1956, probably because of its pacifist "message," Friendly Persuasion won the Venice Film Festival Grand Prize.
Friends with Benefits

A Manhattan headhunter (Mila Kunis) and her recruit (Justin Timberlake) settle into a no-strings-attached sex arrangement. Kunis makes a tart, lovely foil for Timberlake's doofy charms, but the film's fundamental thinness becomes unavoidable. (K.J.)

Best friends in a Manhattan apartment building (Jennifer Westfeldt, Adam Scott) try raising a child together without the benefits of a sexual relationship or shared domicile.
