MovieDescription
Firehouse Dog
Released: 2007
Rated: PG
Now Playing? No
A Hollywood pooch gets lost during a stunt and ends up a stray outside a firehouse. The human actors are good, but the computer-animated animal humor is by now very familiar. (M.I.)
Firelight
Released: 1997
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
Set in one of those British country houses that never seem to have enough fireplaces, it's basically a Barbara Cartland novel that's been left out in the snow.
Fireproof
Released: 2008
Rated: PG
Now Playing? No
Having lost the love connection to his wife (Erin Bethea), a firefighter (Kirk Cameron) turns for help to his born-again-Christian father (Harris Malcom). This is American evangelical Christian storytelling at its finest, almost sublime in its devotion to artless, unambiguous sentimentality and wide-eyed, tear-filled, gauzy, suburban spiritual wonder. (J.R.)
Fires On The Plain
Released: 1960
Rated:
Now Playing? No
An appalling film; one that will wrench you and leave you emotionally drained. In the Philippines, in the waning days of W.W.II, the last remnants of Hirohito's Army have reverted to savagery and cannibalism; the one man free from this deadly cycle is Private Tamura, so far gone in the ravages of tuberculosis that the marauding hunters always reject him. As he stumbles from one gruesome spectacle to the next, Tamura becomes a figure like Christ of Candide - an innocent trapped in a landscape of corruption and terror. "Nobi" is truly unique, one of the few film equivalents for a novel like Jerzy Kozinski's "The Painted Bird."

First Blood
Released: 1982

A Vietnam vet is picked up for vagrancy in a small Northwestern city whose police chief is a shade too touchy, a shade too conservative, a shade too troubled by the vet's long hair. Pushed too far, the vet explodes, and we quickly see that it is the town and the chief, not the vagrant, who are in trouble. Simpleminded, straight-ahead melodrama with lots of sock.
First Daughter

Rated: PG-13
Now Playing? No
A multigenerational, hardcore-soundtracked trip down craggy Alsakan peaks via snowboard
First Love

One of Max Schell's occasional lush directorial efforts, based on the Turgenev novella.
First Name: Carmen
Released: 1984
Rated:
Now Playing? No
With typically eccentric master, Jean-Luc Godard retells the sordid, romantic saga of Prosper Merimee's quintessential harlot, Carmen--updating the action and casting himself as Carmen's uncle, a seedy, failed movie director whom we first meet in an asylum. The music is not Bizet, but a Beethoven quartet, whose monumental power counterpoints the downward pull of love on the run. Great stuff; Godard has not diminished an inch in creativity or iconoclasm.
First on the Moon
Released: 2005
Rated: NR
Now Playing? No
A Russian mockumentary about cosmonauts who beat the U.S. to the moon.
First Snow
Released: 2006
Rated: R

In this deft psychological thriller, Guy Pearce plays a traveling salesman whoâ??s told by a fortune teller that he wonâ??t live past the first snow of winter, then tries to adjust both his life and his fate. Director Mark Fergus keeps us guessing whether the prediction is a scam or not, and he gets a lot of mileage out of the wide-open spaces of the New Mexico desert. (K.W.)
First Sunday

Bumbling criminals (Ice Cube, Tracy Morgan) try to rob a church in this bland message comedy. (M.S.)

Five Came Back
Released: 1939

The plane that crashes in a trackless jungle; the madly colorful cross-section of passengers; the desperate attempts to repair the plane before a cannibal onslaught, and final choice--who will live and who will die? Brilliant novelist Nathaniel West (Miss Lonelyhearts) made his living as an unabashed hack screenwriter; this is the best remembered of his many scenarios. (M.W.)

Five Days One Summer
Released: 1982
Rated:
Now Playing? No
A grim little anecdote, amplified from a Kay Boyle short story, about an incestuous upper class British couple (uncle and niece) and their mountain-climbing holiday in Germany. The climbing scenes themselves are incredible; the story has a sad, elliptic tension. It passed unnoticed, but this is one of Fred Zinnemann's best films - as good as High Noon or Day Of The Jackal, better than Julia or A Man For All Seasons.

Five Easy Pieces

Jack Nicholson in one of the great performances of the early '70s; Bobby "Eroica" Dupea, piano prodigy, the scion of a musical family who has fled to a world of oil-riggers, Tammy Wynette songs, bowling alleys and finally the distant North. Nicholson's restaurant "blowup" scene ("You want me to hold the chicken?") alone is worth the price of admission. The film is a special favorite of Ingmar Bergman's.
