Erich Von Strohelm first gained fame as an actor. He was the acme of Prussian militarism for post-WWI audiences: autocratic, vicious, corrupt--the "Man You Love To Hate." But it was as a director that he revealed his unique genius; revolving stories around his own villainous persona, he made films that were audaciously frank and brutally real. In a Hollywood devoted to the adolescent and frivolous, Von Stroheim was the great realist. This tale of swindles, seduction and betrayal is one of his best. (M.W.)

Busby Berkeley's finest hour by far the best of all the '30s Warners musicals. It's another hectic, whipsaw paced backstage story with complications galore and little logic, but Jimmy Cagney is on hand to give the whole thing pace and drive and nonstop energy. The last-hour of Footlight Parade consists of three astonishing musical numbers that generally leave even the most jaded audiences gaping in awe.

The second in Sergio Leone's scorching trilogy about a nameless, cheroot-chewing bounty hunter in battered black hat and gaudy serape--a mercenary knight-in-arms with steely eyes and a merciless fast draw. This is spaghetti Western, with an atmosphere of operatic splendor, macabre jesting and omnipresent danger and death.
