Grease
Released: 1978
Rated: PG

As the hottest thing on two hips since Elvis the Pelvis, John Travolta is pure delight in this musical about a high school romance in the 1950s.
Grease II
Released: 1982
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Grease II, huh? Well Grease I wasn't so hot, and this one doesn't even have the original show to work over. Furthermore, it's saddled with a writer (Ken Finkelman) whose major credit is Airplane II and a director (choreographer Pat Birch) who hasn't made a movie since. Draw your own conclusions. (But it's always nice to look at Michelle Pfeiffer, even in the confines of Rydell High).
Grease Sing-A-Long

Now Playing? No
Grease is the word, and so is singing along.
Great Day in the Morning
Released: 1956
Rated:

Offbeat Western by the director of some of the best Val Lewton horror films; Andrew Sarris applauds it for its "subdued, pastel-colored sensibility." (M.W.)
Great Expectations

Alfonso Cuaron's cinematic adaptation of what many people consider Charles Dickens' greatest novel.

Great Scout and Cathouse Thursday
Released: 1976
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Another cute Western whorehouse comedy from the '70s (from a director who specializes in family movies), limply imitative of Sam Peckinpah and Burt Kennedy.
Greatest Game Ever Played

Green Dolphin Street
Released: 1947
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Transatlantic triangle causes grief for all concerned. (M.W.)
Green Lantern
Released: 2011
Rated: PG-13
Now Playing? No
In this muddled mess of a superhero film, a test pilot (Ryan Reynolds) becomes an intergalactic do-gooder with the help of a mystical ring. Director Martin Campbell has a way with action set-pieces, but he’s less at home with the earthbound sequences and endless expositional passages. (M.S.)
Green Lantern 3D
Released: 2011
Rated: PG-13
Now Playing? No
Green Pastures
Released: 1936
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Marc Connelly's legendary play about a Southern black church sexton's conception of the Bible, transposed to the argot and imagery of the racist culture around him, with a black Moses, Noah and Abraham all paying homage to Rex Ingram's "De Lawd." Green Pastures has been subject to the fluctuations of taste; once revered, it is often derogated as condescending. Yet the film, like King Vidor's earlier Hallelujah, broke incredible ground, and it retains a childlike charm: fantastical, naive and affectionate.
Green Street Hooligans
Released: 2005
Rated: R

Green Zone
Released: 2010
Rated: R

In Iraq, an American soldier (Matt Damon) begins to question why he can't find any WMD. The attempt to wed jitter-cam action with political conspiracy falls flat -- especially when the big secret is pretty much conventional wisdom at this point. (S.R.)
Greenberg

House-sitting in L.A., a 40-year-old misfit (Ben Stiller) confronts his youthful mistakes and has an awkward affair with his brother's personal assistant (Greta Gerwig). Writer-director Noah Baumbach (Kicking and Screaming, The Squid and the Whale) continues his wry, painful commentary on Generation X. (K.B.)

Gregory's Girl
Released: 1981
Rated:

A tender, funny little Scottish film about a gangling high school boy who falls in love with the female soccer star who replaces him on the school team. Forsyth has a sure, witty, humanistic touch; he went on to make the poetic and whimsical Local Hero.

Gridiron Gang

You don't expect much from yet another story of troubled urban youth who learn teamwork and self-respect from a hard-ass football coach (The Rock). Yet this film is a pleasant surprise â?? a swift, sure-footed and gritty melodrama that plays to the strengths of its formula and elicits empathy for its kids. (M.I.)

Grind
Released: 2003
Rated: PG-13

Grindhouse
Released: 2007
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's homage to cheap horror and action flicks is two movies in one, Rodriguez' "Planet Terror" and Tarantino's "Death Proof," along with some tongue-in-cheeky trailers. More than just a fun three hours at the movies, Grindhouse is a total immersion in movie geekdom, in which the packaging, marketing and lore are as much a part of the deal as the images up onscreen.
