Hardcore
Released: 1979
Rated:

A furious Calvinist pursues his runaway daughter through the grimy world of sex for sale in Los Angeles. The inspiration for Paul Schrader's screenplay was "The Searchers," and Schrader may have followed the Ford Western too closely. What seemed a majestic ending in the earlier movie seems forced and peculiar here.
Harlan County U.S. A.
Released: 1977
Rated:
Now Playing? No
"Bloody Harlan County" - coal mining center and legendary site of numerous labor battles - and the mid '70s strike; recorded on the spot, from beginning to end, by Barbara Kopple's courageous camera crew. It's all there, the union meetings, the picket clashes, the horrors of black lung disease, the labor goon violence, even, in on hair raising moment, a company thug aiming his revolver, pointblank at the camera...plus the entire historical contest of the strikes, including the struggle to wrest the union leadership away from Boyle and his murderous cohorts. A superb, slashing documentary.
Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay
Released: 2008
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
This not-near-as-funny sequel has the Korean American Harold (John Cho) and the Indian American Kumar (Kal Penn) spending some time at Gitmo, then touring the American South à la Borat. Various ethnic stereotypes are exploded and exploited, often at the same time. (K.W.)

Harold and Maude
Released: 1971
Rated: PG
Now Playing? No
The romance of a free-spirited septuagenarian and a suicide-obsessed and introverted rich boy, both of whom attend funerals as a hobby. The movie seems as if it might be stuffed full of peace-and-love, screw-the-establishment clich©s and manufactured whimsy (as, in fact, Colin Higgins' later scripts sometimes were). But Hal Ashby's lucid, gentle direction - and two magnificent performances by Ruth Gordon and Bud Cort - keep the film effervescent and sparkling. It's a genuine classic of its era.
Harper
Released: 1966
Rated:

Ross MacDonald's thriller, The Moving Target, with private eye Lew Archer renamed to accommodate Newman's obsession with the letter H. Wry, low-key.

Harry and Tonto

Rated:
Now Playing? No
After the death of his best human friend, an elderly gent from New York City decides to make a cross-county jaunt to California accompanied by his best feline friend, Tonto. Their adventures are alternately touching, funny and astringent. The theme of the picture is: Don't let life trap you, incidentally, the woman who flirts with Art Carney's Harry in the last sequence is an ex-burlesque performer named Sally Marr, who's the mother of Lenny Bruce.
Harry Brown
Released: 2009

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2

While this is far from a perfect piece of filmcraft, director David Yates and screenwriter Steve Kloves know exactly how to guide us through the farewell to Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson). It's rich with the moments that make this story deep and resonant. (S.R.)
