Isadora Duncan
Released: 1966

Ken Russell made his reputation with a series of "docu-dramas" - mostly biographies of musical personalities - for the BBC in the early and middle sixties. They remain among his most characteristic and brilliant, efforts, and this was one of the best; a wildly excessive portrait of mad, leggy, art intoxicated dancer Isadora Duncan, who became almost a parody of the "free spirit" and the "aesthere" and who died when her scarf wrapped around the wheel of a racing car in Monte Carlo - as she prepared for yet another romantic assignation - and strangled her. Like Isadora herself, Russell's film is crazy, beautiful and touching: and it's better than the Karl Reisz-Vanessa Redgrave feature which, even to the use of "Bye -Bye Blackbird" as a signature theme, it obviously inspired.

Islands in the Stream
Released: 1977
Rated:

Ernest Hemingway's last novel - the adventures of an expatriate American painter in Cuba, before and during World War II; the story with which "Papa" was struggling when he committed suicide - in a solid, often stirring, but basically "detoxified" adaptation. Thomas Hudson's sex life has been cleaned up, and so have his politics. And the David Hemmings character is obviously a steal from Walter Brennan's "Eddie the Rummy" in the film of "To Have And Have Not" - a characterization which owed far more to Brennan and Hawks than it did to Hemingway. But "Islands in the Stream" is an underrated book, and the movie - faults and all - is not that far shy of it.

After years of preaching to us in "serious" films that telegraphed their messages with the blatancy of Chevrolet ads, Stanley Kramer decided to try "something a Little Less Serious" - his original title. The result, surprisingly is his best movie: A vulgar, overblown but cleverly written and lively comedy about greed. Four "ordinary" carfuls of travelers race toward the California coast and the "Big W", under which is buried a trunkful of stolen loot. What can I say: It's bad, but it's fun.
