A soon-to-be empty nester (Meryl Streep) has a fling -- with the man she divorced 10 years ago (Alec Baldwin). The set-up is vintage farce, and the scenes work because director Nancy Meyers has a keen sense for working with actors. (S.R.)

A 15-year-old overachiever (Keir Gilchrist) checks himself into a mental ward in this warmhearted film, a sensitively wrought but also very funny portrait of the way we respond to pressure. It affirms the good things in life without ever whitewashing the bad. (K.J.)

Ivan the Terrible, Part 1
Released: 1942
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Sergei Eisenstein's vast, heaven-daunting epic of the legendary tyrant and his Herculean struggles against the Mongols, his scheming courtiers and his own raging psychoses. Intended as a trilogy, the third section was never completed, since someone informed Joseph Stalin that the paranoiac, crazed despot in Eisenstein's story bore more than passing resemblance to Stalin himself. This is one of the great, unique masterpieces of film history, and Prokofiev's score alone is worth the price of admission. As a movie epic, it stands beside Intolerance, Seven Samurai and very few others; it's a testament to a great, proud, reckless artist who forever changed the face of film making and died while daring still more.
Ivy
Released: 1947
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Victorian murderer merrily kills her way through London; the double entendre of "poison ivy" is deliberate. (M.W.)
