Angelina Jolie’s debut as a writer-director is a wartime love story, as well as a gritty depiction of the horrors of ethnic cleansing in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the ‘90s. Jolie shows great promise as a visual storyteller, creating highly dramatic, intensely emotional and vividly felt moments. (M.B.)

In this tame but appealing melodrama, a brokenhearted TV writer (Adam Brody) cares for his grandma and forms a bond with the family across the street. The film shows insight into the travails of growing into adulthood. (M.B.)

British and American officials squabble in the run-up to the invasion of a certain unnamed Middle Eastern country. Not every joke hits its mark in this grim satire, but the film has devastating points to make about manuveuring bureaucrats, especially the kind who can get people killed. (K.B.)

A farmer (Jason Statham) seeks vengeance against a race of animal-warriors in the latest videogame adaptation by Uwe Boll, infamous for making films so bad they’re good. This one is full of inscrutable casting choices and cheesy effects. (M.S.)
In the Shadow of the Moon

You may think you know everything there is to know about the Apollo mission that first landed a man on the moon, but director David Sington has put together a documentary that makes it feel like we’re going there for the very first time. The astronauts turn out to be regular raconteurs, bursting with humor and insight, even poetry. (K.W.)

Tommy Lee Jones plays a retired Army sergeant who tries to figure out what happened to his son, an infantryman back from Iraq whose body was found in a field. Director Paul Haggis allows the movie’s sadness to seep into our bones, and Jones does another of his beautifully calibrated withholding acts. (K.W.)
In the Year of the Pig

This incisive 1969 documentary about the Vietnam War examines the peak of the conflict through interviews and news footage.
In This Our Life
Released: 1942

Unaccustomed but good soaper from John Huston. Based on an Ellen Glasgow novel; notable for Bette Davis' deliciously unrestrained villainy, and a roadhouse sequence in which most of the cast of the Maltese Falcon appear as unbilled extras.
In Time
Released: 2011
Rated: PG-13

In the near future, only the rich can afford to buy extra time for their lives, while the poor face the prospect of dying at the official cutoff point of 25. Casting pretty young things like Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried only goes so far to counteract the film's fundamental phoniness. (K.J.)

In Which We Serve
Released: 1942

The survivors of a blasted World War II British warship cling to a life raft as the memories of what brought them there flood over them. Written, co-directed by and starring Noel Coward, this was both his cinematic magnum opus and his gift to the war effort. I like Coward better in his frivolous moments, but still a rousing film; it also marked the directorial debut of David Lean (listed as Coward's co-helmsman) and the acting debut of Richard Attenborough, who has an unforgettable bit role as a terrified seaman.

A no-nonsense cop (Adrien Brody) has a flair for fashion and a celebrity (Lindsay Lohan) takes revenge on the paparazzi in a collection of comedic sketches. (TMS)

After the will of a dead mother (Lubna Azabal) discloses horrifying secrets, her grown children (Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin, Maxim Gaudette) search for her roots in her homeland, a war-scarred, unnamed Middle Eastern country. This French-Canadian film is an eloquent and powerful antiwar statement. (M.B.)
Inception

In Christopher Nolan's mindbender, a crew led by Leonardo DiCaprio is hired to plant an idea in the head of the heir to an energy conglomerate (Cillian Murphy). The delight diminishes somewhat in the second hour, but that doesn't ruin the most engaging action film in years. (K.J.)

An overlooked film about the big-time aspirations of a small-town housewife trapped in conformity. The lead is my favorite current "unrecognized" American film actress, Kathleen Quinlan. (M.W.)
