Into the Woods
Released: 2014
Rated: PG
Now Playing? Yes
Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's musical combining fairy tale characters Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford), the Wolf (Johnny Depp) and others touches on the moralizing aspect of the tales but is mostly a framework for the songs. Director Rob Marshall's film is at its best when he retains aspects of the stage version rather than relying on CGI effects. (S.R.)

D.W. Griffith was a Southern Gentlemen, but he also considered himself a tolerant man...and, impregnated as he was with the Confederate view of the Civil War and miscegenation, he was bewildered by the furious cries of "racism" that greeted "Birth of a Nation." So, with the profits from "Birth," he set out to vindicate himself. To create a massive indictment of bigotry throughout history, interweaving four separate stories; the Crucifixion of Christ, the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre of the Huguenot, Belshazzar's Feast and the Destruction of Babylon, and a modern story of labor turmoil, urban crime, hypocritical charity foundations, and injustice in the courts. The stories are told simultaneously, all linked by the image of Lillian Gish as an eternal Mater Familias - her emblem, "Out of the cradle, endlessly rocking, " borrowed from that old champion of Abe Lincoln and Emancipation, Walt Whitman. The separate dramas merge and clash and finally pour, like four boiling streams, into an amazing, hypnotic climax, a series of breathless, roaring crescendos that leave you gasping. Unfortunately there was less of an audience for Griffith's majestic hymn to brotherhood, than there was for his glorification of the Ku Klux Klan. He lost his shirt on "Intolerance," and started on the economic downslide that would eventually drive him from the industry. But what he managed to create out of his sublime "folly" is a staggering achievement, even after 60 years. It should not be missed.

A young man’s love life is undermined by his parents (Frankie J. Holden and Brenda Blethyn), untalented performers who are mad to make it in show business. The film is ostensibly a comedy, but it’s really just a collection of awkward stage performances set off by scenes of familial dysfunction. (J.R.)

William Faulkner's anti-lynching novel - the one that finally made him "respectable" and immediately preceded his Nobel Prize - rather lovingly adapted in his home town of Oxford, Miss. More faithful than many of the tries at Faulkner, though the master himself preferred Sirk's The Tarnished Angels.

This remake of the classic horror film is set in San Francisco. Matthew Bennell (Donald Sutherland) assumes that when a friend (Brooke Adams) complains of her husband's strange mood, it's a marital issue. However, he begins to worry as more people report similar observations. His concern is confirmed when writer Jack Bellicec (Jeff Goldblum) and his wife (Veronica Cartwright) discover a mutated corpse. Besieged by an invisible enemy, Bennell must work quickly before the city is consumed. (TMS)

Morgan Freeman is Nelson Mandela who, as a way of easing racial tensions, enthusiastically supports the South African rugby team. Inspiring and educational, even if Clint Eastwood's direction is flabby at times. (M.B.)

Vince Papale (Mark Wahlberg) was a down-on-his-luck bartender who got added to the Philadelphia Eagles roster in 1976 without having played college football. The film lays it on pretty thick at times, but it has some times-was-bad grit, and Wahlberg's performance is admirably restrained. (K.W.)

Gene Kelly's most ambitious film - but not, unhappily, his best: a trio of ballets, all choreographed by Kelly and all pitched in different keys and styles. The opener is a sort of bastardized Petrouchka crossbred with the more sentimental elements from Chaplin and Les Enfants du Paradis; the middle section - and it's a shame this one isn't better - is an Americanization of the Ophuls-Schnitzler sex roundelay La Ronde, scored by Andre Previn. Only at the end, when Kelly puts on his sailor suit and cuts capers with some "Arabian Nights" cartoons by Hanna-Barbera, do things really swing.

Iraq in Fragments

James Longleyâ??s impressionistic film does a great job of showing us what it feels like to inhabit war-torn Iraq. It takes us to a Sunni enclave in Baghdad, a Shiite enclave in southern Iraq and a Kurdish village in the north, leaving us with a firm sense of how little we know about this place. (K.W.)

This superhero epic stars Robert Downey Jr. as a weapons designer who retools himself as a knight in shining armor. Director Jon Favreau is a little clunky with the action scenes, but the gizmos are fun; and Downey, his brain working a mile a minute, propels the movie forward. (K.W.)

In the sequel, Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) fights two nemeses, a brooding Russian scientist (Mickey Rourke) and an ethically challenged munitions manufacturer (Sam Rockwell, working too hard). Downey winningly revives his antsy performance in this goofy superhero movie. (K.B.)
