Jersey Boys
Released: 2014
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
In 1960s New Jersey, a group of childhood friends and small-time criminals (John Lloyd Young, Vincent Piazza, Michael Lomenda) form the chart-topping pop act the Four Seasons. With overly broad characterizations and too much melodrama, this big-screen version of the Broadway musical feels overwrought. (S.R.)

The most heroic of the many film incarnations of the James Gang. (M.W.)
Jesus Camp

In this revealing documentary, the children of Protestant Fundamentalists are given the â??Onward, Christian Soldiersâ? treatment at a summer retreat. The film doesnâ??t provide much in the way of context, but its up-close-and-personal look at the scare tactics used to indoctrinate these young souls is an eye-opener. (K.W.)

Jet Li's Fearless
Released: 2006
Rated: PG-13

Li stars as the real-life Chinese martial-arts legend Huo Yuanjia, hotheaded founder of the Jinwu Sports Federation. Heâ??s fabulous in the role, ricocheting from action set-piece to emotional overload and back again. (M.S.)
Jezebel
Released: 1938
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Perhaps the ultimate in Bette's gallery of scarlet women; in one scene, indeed, a scarlet dress she wears to a cotillion ball almost sets the entire plantation afire. A deep-South Civil War melodrama, Jezebel was rushed out by Warners' to steal the thunder from Selznick's mammoth Gone With The Wind publicity machine. For many people, it's better than the film it completed with - including Andre Bazin, who thought Jezebel (along with Stagecoach and Le Jour Se Leve, in the late '30s) showed "the pure symmetry and ripening of classic art ... as perfectly balanced as a wheel..."
JFK

Oliver Stone's 1991 thriller about events leading up to President John F. Kennedy's assassination.
Jimmy Carter: Man from Plains
Released: 2007
Rated: PG
Now Playing? No
Director Jonathan Demme follows the former president on the tour for his controversial book Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid. The film suffers from a feeling of sameness, but it’s still an intriguing historical document, full of affectingly candid moments. (K.J.)
Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius
Released: 2001
Rated: G

Jindabyne
Released: 2006
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
Four Australian men go on a weekend fishing trip, discover the corpse of a young woman, and get in trouble for waiting 48 hours to tell the authorities. Gabriel Byrne and Laura Linney are brilliant as the couple whose lives are affected by the incident, but the film ultimately loses its sense of direction. (M.B.)
Jinxed
Released: 1982
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Sweet, bosomy and rather addled chanteuse follows her gambler-lover from casino to casino in Reno as he fleeces a young blackjack dealer. In self-defense, the dealer seduces her, after which she gloriously proclaims: "I'll never walk again!" The premises are absurd, and the humor keeps flirting with, winking at or plain groping for bad taste, but the actors and director Don Siegel are so expert at refining this cheap, raw ore that they compensate for every gaucherie in the script. Jinxed is really a Midler vehicle, and her whole personality - vulnerable, goofy, horny, a little desperate, suffused with a kind of radiant, wacked-out optimism - floods the screen.
Jipanqus
Released: 2001
Rated:

Jiro Dreams of Sushi
Released: 2011

This marvelous documentary takes a riveting look at culinary excellence in a microscopic Tokyo sushi restaurant. The film is a stunning essay about an improbably wide range of topics — work, family, beauty, perfection, ecology. (K.B.)
Jitterbugs

Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work
Released: 2010
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
This sympathetic documentary chronicles a year in the life of the sardonic comedian, as well as detailing her remarkable career. It’s often wickedly funny, and Rivers doesn’t at all censor herself for the camera. (K.J.)

Jobs

The story of how Apple's Steve Jobs (Ashton Kutcher) went from college dropout to superstar entrepreneur. Kutcher fares well with a flawed script, but he doesn't seem to understand the complex motivations behind some of Jobs' actions. (M.S.)

A bourgeois businessman searching for his runaway daughter and a redneck blue collar bully whose speech is a poisonous stream of profanity and prejudice - Archie Bunker mixed with Goebbels and Celine - join forces in a brotherhood of bigotry.
