This intimate epic follows a South Vietnamese family dealing with the horrors that followed the U.S. withdrawal in the 1970s. It’s a magnificent saga that shows the father sent off to a Vietcong reeducation camp and the rest of the family launched on a harrowing journey as boat people. (K.W.)

A Mercury Theater production of the Eric Ambler espionage thriller. Noir-ish fun. Welles appears as a glowering Turk; he directed all his own scenes. The rest were by Norman Foster, of the Mr. Moto movies and Disney's "Davy Crockett" series.

Singers (Queen Latifah, Dolly Parton) squabble as their gospel choir competes on a national circuit. Some of the music is good, but this backstage musical is done in by too many dull characters and silly subplots. (K.B.)

The Scottsboro Boys "rape" trial - one of the great causes celebres of the '30s - re-created.
Judge Priest

Irvin S. Cobb's renowned rural jurist, dispensing equal parts salty wit and rough justice in a Southern town still awash in memories of the Civil War, charmingly incarnated by Will Rogers. He was the most popular male movie star in the U.S. at the time, and this is his best performance. It's also probably the best pre-Informer film of John Ford's.

A third-grader (Jordana Beatty) has plans for an awesome summer, but when her parents leave her in the care of a quirky aunt (Heather Graham), it feels like only awfulness will fill those long days. There’s nothing remotely authentic about childhood in this adaptation of Megan McDonald's youth fiction books. (S.R.)
Juggernaut
Released: 1974
Rated:
Now Playing? No
A Luxury liner, a gang of terrorists, and a bomb-defusing team - one of whom has the shakes. There are a few "disaster" movies that are actually good; this is one of them. (M.W.)

Researching an African neighborhood in Brussels, a writer struggles with his editor.
Jules and Jim

Love is triangular in François Truffaut's classic.
Julia
Released: 1977
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Adapted from a fragment of Lillian Hellman's autobiographical Pentimento: the tale of an adored friend of her youth, her idealism, her perseverance and her destruction in the Nazi rip tide. The direction, acting, musical score and cinematography are impeccable - and Vanessa Redgrave has some spine-tingling moments as Julia - but the film has a frosty, decorate quality. From Alvin Sargent's portrait of Dashiell Hammett and Hellman, you'd never guess that the two of them were the models for the devil-may-care wisecracking Nick and Nora Charles - nor does the movie's Dorothy Parker seem capable of telling a good joke. Sargent is sober, serious, "committed"; for him, theme is everything, moral fervor is paramount.
Julie & Julia
Released: 2009
Rated: PG-13
Now Playing? No
In Nora Ephron’s comedy, Julie (Amy Adams) cooks her way through Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking while, in a parallel story set in the 1950s, Child herself (Meryl Streep) finds her vocation as a chef. Adams is a mousy, grouchy irritant, but Streep’s half of the movie is irresistible. (K.J.)

Hayden Christensen racks up the frequent-flier miles in this sci-fi thriller about a guy who can teleport himself anywhere at any time, but the movie itself never quite leaves the ground. It’s about nothing more than a callow youth’s desire to acquire things and travel. (K.W.)

Dueling matriarchs (Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine) are brought together, somewhat unwillingly, on the eve of the nuptials of their respective offspring (Paula Patton, Laz Alonso). This urban family rom-com has something interesting to say about race and romance. (M.S.)
