Filmdom's most popular and simpatico simian was a lovelorn ape, the sovereign of Skull Island, torn form his natural habitat, crazed by impossible desire and paraded before the voracious, kibitzing citizens of "civilization," for a few cheap thrills. In 1933, abetted by ingenious miniature work and the astonishing trick photography of Willis O'Brien, Kong and his legend were unleashed on the world, and that first "escape" has kept its primal lunge and impact for half a century. The two sequels - both with Robert Armstrong, Kong's original captor, a man of iron will and leaden eloquence - are lesser but still charming monkeyshines.

After leaving a mental asylum, a man (Michael Douglas) takes his wayward teenage daughter (Evan Rachel Wood) on a quest for buried treasure in Southern California’s corporate sprawl. The storytelling is heartfelt, and Douglas and Wood strike sparks. (T.B.)
King Of Hearts
Released: 1967
Rated:

During World War I, a little French town, evacuated hurriedly because of an impending bomb explosion, becomes entirely populated by escapees from the local asylum, who proceed to establish a dreamlike little community of endless carnival, theatricality and fragile grace. They anoint as their king a gentle young Scottish soldier (Alan Bates) sent to scout out the terrain, but the world and the war stand outside the city's walls, waiting to invade, to crush, to destroy. One of the most popular films of the '60s, and perhaps the most charming, seductive and gaily decorative of all the cinema's antiwar statements.
King of Kings
Released: 1961
Rated:

Nicholas Ray's version of Christ's Passion. Ridiculed in its day as "I Was A Teenage Jesus" (it is recognizably the work of a man who made Rebel Without A Cause), it's actually one of the few Hollywood religious spectacles worth watching, far superior to the DeMille original. Intelligent, well mounted, with a provocative angle: Judas is portrayed as a social idealist torn between the rebellion of Barabbas and the pacifism of Christ.
King of the Hill
Released: 1993
Rated: PG-13

Aaron (Jesse Bradford), a young boy living in St. Louis during the 1930s, has a deep attachment to his younger brother. After his father (Jeroen Krabbe) leaves them and his mother (Lisa Eichhorn) departs for an asylum, he promises to retrieve his brother from their uncle's custody. In the meantime, he must fend for himself among townspeople and the tenants in the hotel where he lives. Forced to come of age alone, Aaron shifts between the harsh real world and the dream world he creates to cope. (TMS)
King Rat

Slimy, Sefton-style opportunist bedevils conscience-stricken Britisher in POW stockade. Very pastel and estheticized for this kind of story; the source was an early James Clavell novel. (M.W.)
King Solomon's Mines
Released: 1950

Rousing adaptation of H. Rider Haggard's blood and thunder African epic. The location photography (by Robert Surtees) and action sequences in this version were considered standard-setters for years.

King's Row
Released: 1942

Idealistic young doctor Parris Mitchell (an absurd performance by Robert Cummings) in one of those sturm und drang "bestsellers" towns where mad passion lurk under every rosebush. This is the movie where Ronald Reagan wakes up to find his legs missing and screams, "Where's the rest of me?" Pretty silly, but with an interestingly grandiloquent photographic style modeled after Citizen Kane.

This lively documentary follows a group of men -- yes, all men -- as they undergo a grueling test to be certified elite French pastry chefs. It's a fascinating look at very fancy cooking, with an emphasis on enormous sugar sculptures that keep shattering into tiny pieces. (K.B.)
