In this by-the-book domestic thriller, newlyweds (Patrick Wilson, Kerry Washington) move into a neighborhood lorded over by a rules-happy sociopath with a gun and a badge (Samuel L. Jackson). The film is boilerplate stuff through and through, aiming to play on our shared fear of a besieged home life but settling instead for being a bland study in improbable vigilantism and profound domestic irritation. (J.R.)

Will Ferrell stars in a bloated, noisy, uncool remake of the ‘70s TV show about a family trapped in an alternate universe of dinosaurs and lizard men. It lacks virtually everything that made the original series so memorable. (M.S.)
Land Of The Pharaohs

Howard Hawks considered this spectacular re-creation of the building of the pyramids one of his worst failures. And he had a simple explanation: "Neither Bill Faulkner nor I knew how a pharaoh talked." That may be true - although the film's admirers include Henri Langlois and Martin Scorsese. But I have yet to be shown that Hawks is capable of making a bad movie.

Tom Hanks cowrote and stars in this bland romantic comedy about a guy who returns to college after being fired from his Wal-Mart-esque job. Hanks has no chemistry with costar Julia Roberts, who plays an alcoholic speech teacher. (M.S.)

Ryan Gosling displays his exacting commitment to characterization as a socially stunted man who shocks his small Minnesota town by establishing a chaste relationship with a wheelchair-bound sex doll. The high-concept premise would be easy to dismiss were the film not so flawlessly executed. (M.B.)

The solid new version of the heroic-collie tale is set in 1930s Britain, where an unemployed coal miner (John Lynch) is forced to sell Lassie to a wealthy duke (Peter Oâ??Toole). The filmâ??s intelligence and lack of sentimentality are rare qualities in a kidsâ?? film. (K.L.)

Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson play a Mr. and Miss Lonely-hearts destined to complete each other across The Pond in this syrupy, if not quite schmaltzy, romantic comedy. Writer-director Joel Hopkins keeps them apart as long as possible, but these two are clearly meant for each other; it says so right there in the script. (K.W.)

While grieving his son's death, a small-town mayor and decorated war hero (Marshall Teague) challenges his community to reclaim its freedom of expression. The storytelling's sloppy, and the filmmakers refuse to find an honest way to address their subject. (S.R.)

This small masterpiece of documentary filmmaking offers a human-scale look at the impact of China’s industrial growth. Over a period of several years, it focuses on a rural couple who leave their children behind to work in city factories, making the long trek home only once a year. (M.B.)
