Micmacs

Riled by the global toll of landmines, a goofy gang of misfits plot to give two arms manufacturers their comeuppance. This fantasy-comedy by Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amélie) is striking to look at, but his blend of whimsy and horror is tasteless. (K.B.)

A middle-aged bachelor (Gianni Di Gregorio) deals with his mother and three other elderly women on an Italian holiday. The film is slight, but the senior actresses are so marvelous that you can’t take your eyes off them. (K.J.)

John Schlesinger's slightly sentimental but affecting adaptation of James Leo Herlihy's Candide-esque tale of an innocent young male hustler (Joe Buck - "one hell of a stud") adrift in the '60s drug and sex miasma of the New York City streets. An acting triumph for both Jon Voight as Buck and Dustin Hoffman as his gimpy, ferrety, tubercular sidekick, Ratso Rizzo. ("I'm walkin' here! I'm walkin' here!")

In Woody Allen's comic fantasy, a frustrated novelist (Owen Wilson) is transported to 1920s Paris, where he hobnobs with greats like Ernest Hemingway (Corey Stoll) and Gertrude Stein (Kathy Bates). The premise is appealing, but the luminaries turn out to be dull caricatures. (K.B.)

There’s much to admire about this old-school heroic drama from Bhutan about an 11th century Tibetan saint who repents the magical revenge he wrought on the villagers who oppressed him. But it’s oddly structured and has trouble sustaining interest in the story. (M.I.)

As Harvey Milk, one of the first gay people ever elected to major public office, Sean Penn does an amazing job of leaving his own tight-lipped masculinity behind; he holds nothing back, following Milk’s lead wherever the charismatic imp takes him. The movie is less a personal biography than a political biography, showing us the formation of the gay movement from the ground up, followed by an assassination that Milk always feared was coming; and director Gus Van Sant, who can go a little dreamy in his other movies, here has everything beautifully under control. (K.W.)
