MovieDescription
Movie 43
Released: 2013
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
Two mannerless strangers (Emma Stone, Kieran Culkin) hook up in a supermarket checkout line, and two parents (Naomi Watts, Liev Schreiber) bully their homeschooled son in this collection of shorts featuring 11 directors and 12 storylines and more than 40 Hollywood stars. It’s sad to see so much talent wasted on a production that looks like it was funded by the loose change in a frat house’s couch. (K.J.)

Very clever parody of a brace of '30s chestnuts, most obviously 42nd Street and Golden Boy. It has some of the gently satiric flavor and panache of Donen's great Singin' In The Rain.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie star in this screwball comedy welded to a Hong Kong-style action flick

The semi-verbal, bumbling Englishman wins a trip to Cannes. It’s a so-so diversion, though star Rowan Atkinson displays his usual expert timing and physical control. (M.I.)
Mr. Blandings Build His Dream House

The perils of suburbia: charming, vintage Cary Grant. (M.W.)
Mr. Brooks
Released: 2007
Rated: R

Kevin Costner plays a buttoned-down family man who leads a double life as a serial killer. The film doesn’t pull off its tonal shifts very well, but Costner gives a great performance, as does William Hurt as his id-come-to-life. (M.B.)

Mr. Death

It will surely be filed away as one of the odder documents in the history of both capital punishment and the Holocaust.
Mr. Deed Goes To Town
Released: 1936
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Longfellow Deeds, a whimsical small-town eccentric and tuba player extraordinaire, inherits $20 million. He decides he wants to give it away to the poor; the "authorities," naturally, decide Deeds is nuts. (In the Reagan administration they'd probably declare him a traitor.) "Capracorn" at its ripest, richest, and most flavorful: a funny, humanistic, pixillated delight.
Mr. Deeds

Rated: PG-13

Adam Sandler takes a crack at a grownup role... and fails

The movie that made Jacques Tati a clown of world renown; still probably his most popular.
Mr. Klein
Released: 1977
Rated:

The first of Joseph Losey's French films, a typically tense and many-layered tale of an art dealer's obsessive pursuit of his imposter in Nazi-occupied Paris. Brilliant, disturbing, unusual - top drawer Losey.
Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium
Released: 2007
Rated: G
Now Playing? No
In this annoying bit of whimsy, a 200-year-old toy-store owner (Dustin Hoffman) delights in seeing kids indulge their imaginations. Hoffman is an unbearable force of nature. (J.R.)
Mr. Peabody & Sherman
Released: 2014
Rated: PG
Now Playing? No
Rocky and Bullwinkle's time-traveling canine genius (voiced by Ty Burrell) and his adopted human son (voiced by Max Charles) get the DreamWorks treatment in this romp through history. The nonlinear storytelling lends effervescence to the tale, the puns will make you giggle, and the characters' intellectual curiosity is laudable. (K.J.)

Mr. Popper's Penguins
Released: 2011

Jim Carrey stars as an obnoxious corporate huckster who is willed six penguins by his late explorer father. The movie is over-produced, under-written, and a waste of everybody’s talent. (M.W.)
Mr. Roberts
Released: 1955
Rated:

Thomas Heggen's stirring play - perhaps Fonda's greatest stage vehicle - about a heroism and struggle on an inactive World War II cargo ship. Ford shot all the exteriors; then, after a fist fight with Fonda, he left, and Mervyn LeRoy shot the interiors. You can really tell the difference.

Stiff upper-lip Britisher on the W.W.II home front. Good, but a little chilly and over decorated; it didn't deserve either its Oscars or its reputation.

Equal parts exploitation film and art-house drama, this 1981 film centers on a mute rape survivor (Zoe Tamerlis) who sets out to get revenge on men who degrade women.
