Long before the terrorists brought the buildings down, France's Philippe Petit strung a wire between the two towers of the World Trade Center and walked off into history, breaking the law in the process, and James Marsh's stunning documentary brings home the notion that this wasn't just a daredevil stunt, it was a work of art that still uplifts the spirit. Much of the movie is concerned with the planning and execution of Petit's early-morning jaunt, but the interviews reveal that he's a truly mythical figure -- elfin, but with nerves of steel. (K.W.)

Man Without a Star
Released: 1955
Rated:
Now Playing? No
An excellent range-war Western - alternately robust and lyrical - about a drifter siding with a beleaguered woman rancher. Perhaps King Vidor last masterpiece; in the mid '50s, it placed near the top (along with Johnny Guitar and The Big Sky) on a Cameras bu cinema poll of the best of the genre. (Its reputation has slipped since.)

Man's Favorite Sport?
Released: 1964
Rated:

A secretly inept fishing "expert" comes face to face with the savagery of nature - both ichthyological and feminine. More leisurely than Hawks' classic comedies of the '30s and '40s - and Rock Hudson cannot really fill in for Cary Grant, for whom the lead role was intended - but it still has warmth and style.

This biopic by Justin Chadwick examines the iconic humanitarian's life, from cradle to grave. Idris Elba (The Office, The Wire) is magnificent as Mandela, but the movie overlooks many other people who contributed to the anti-Apartheid movement in South Africa. (M.B.)

The often filmed chestnut about two youthful buddies - one of whom hits the good road, and one the bad. John Dillinger was shot to death after catching this film at the Biograph; your fates sure to be milder. (M.W.)

Gangster, crooner and prima donna engage in erotic antics. (M.W.)

An informal remake of Howard Hawks "Tiger Shark," - again about a triangle involving a deformed man, but with the action switched from tuna-fishing to high tension line workers. Salty, brawling, typically fast and vintage Warner Brothers show. (M.W.)

Jennifer Baichwal’s stunning documentary presents the work of Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky, who chronicles the defiling of Mother Earth by dams, mines and factories. The industrial images from China and Bangladesh are truly, sadly awesome. (K.W.)

In 1981, the young Chinese dancer Li Cunxin (Chi Cao) visits the Houston Ballet as an exchange student, then gets married to avoid going back to the People's Republic. Based on Li's autobiography, this is a likable film with much fine dancing, though director Bruce Beresford doesn't seem to be looking for nuances. (K.B.)
