Director Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale) has made a purposely uncomfortable film about a razor-tongued writer (Nicole Kidman) who comes home for the wedding of her estranged sister (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and wreaks emotional havoc. Not even Kidman’s formidable talents can make sense of this cruel character, though there is something unequivocally fearless in her performance. (S.D.)

Mary of Scotland

Adapted from the Maxwell Anderson verse drama: fiery Mary once again in the hands of a cold, sexless Queen Bess. A good costume drama. Ford, according to some associates, was having a romance with his leading lady during the filming; otherwise, he doesn't seem much engaged - although, as a fervent old Irishman, he probably enjoyed sticking it to the English.

Mary Poppins
Released: 1964

The Disney's studio's highly sanitized and perhaps overly boisterous version of P.L. Travers' immortal magical English nanny. The movie completely misses the wistful, dryly fantastic quality of the books, but it offers, as recompense, high spirits and lots of flash and sass. Disney is said to have regarded this as his group's highest achievement, though it pales next to the great cartoon features of the '30s and '40s.
