The "Lubitsch Touch" - effervescent, urbane, bittersweet wry - applied to a gentle political satire: East meets West n the battleground of Parasian haute couture and high life. Garbo is the Russian special envoy in Paris, sent to make sure that a sale of czarist jewelry will reap enough to offset the last failed five-year plan; her hard line is quickly softened by her three corruptible comrades charming rou© and Paris itself. It's her most winning performance, tender and high-spirited, and the cast around her is perfect.

The Coen brothers have adapted Cormac McCarthy’s novel about a guy (Josh Brolin) who tries to walk off with $2.4 million in drug money, only to be pursued by the most dazzling serial killer since Hannibal Lecter (Javier Bardem), and the result is a nifty little thriller that’s as dry and unforgiving as the West Texas landscape it’s set in. As a hit man obsessed with the role of fate in life and death, Bardem makes off with the movie. (K.W.)

Natalie Portman doesn’t seem to be having much fun as a foul-mouthed, relationship-averse woman who enters a friends-with-benefits relationship with Ashton Kutcher. The romantic comedy has a few fresh ideas but suffers from Ivan Reitman’s listless direction. (K.J.)

Troubled by visions of an apocalyptic flood, a man (Russell Crowe) takes steps to protect his family (Jennifer Connelly, Douglas Booth, Emma Watson) in this Hollywood take on the Biblical tale. Though Crowe portrays his character in a lifelike manner, there's a mirthless quality to the film that makes it feel overly serious. (M.B.)

None But the Lonely Heart
Released: 1944

Clifford Odets' directorial debut: an adaptation of Richard Llewellyn's novel about an angry young lower-class Cockney, adrift in London's seamier quarters. I defer further description of Odets and his film to the great Jean Renoir: "We became excellent friends...Clifford got me to read his plays, and it was a revelation...The precise delineation of character and the true ring of the dialogue are not what matters most. What matters is their bitter poetry, powerful, profound, and despairing...What I want to emphasize here is that this child of the theater was also a brilliant film director. His film None But The Lonely Hearts is, in my humble opinion, a masterpiece. Jovial hayseed with a grin as wide as the Natchez amiably disrupts the Army. Based on Mac Hyman's play, this is a repeat of the 1956 stage role that made a star of Andy Griffith. "
