Paranoid Park
Released: 2007

Gus Van Sant's melancholy masterpiece inhabits the male skateboarding subculture, with a cast chosen almost entirely from MySpace.com. A study in teenage self-awareness, it’s breathtaking, heartbreaking, tragic, gorgeous and true all at the same time. (M.S.)
Paranormal Activity
Released: 2009
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
An irritatingly senseless, often just plain dopey suburban couple (Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat) is plagued by mysterious thuds in the night. Don't believe the hype: This poorly acted, shoddily conceived, anti-art-directed non-starter is just plain dull. (M.S.)
Paranormal Activity 2
Released: 2010
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
A new pair of victims (Brian Boland, Sprague Grayden) capture footage of supernatural stuff via security apparatus and nanny cams. This inevitable followup is spookier than its predecessor, but only in terms of the amount of jump-out-of-your-seatiness. (M.S.)
Paranormal Activity 3
Released: 2011
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
This outing in the faux documentary, supernatural shocker series finally gets things right by smoothing out the scattershot pacing and leavening it all with just the right amount of humor. As before, a suburban family is tormented by invisible beings caught on blurry videotape. (M.S.)
Paranormal Activity 4

Strange events abound in a suburban neighborhood when a creepy family moves in. Almost plotless and entirely unscary, this may be one of the most unnecessary sequels ever. (M.J.)

Modern problems collide with old-school parenting methods when a man (Billy Crystal) and his eager-to-please wife (Bette Midler) babysit their three grandchildren. The comedy is nothing special, but the actors deserve credit for their professionalism. (L.C.)
Pariah
Released: 2011
Rated: R

In this engaging, wholly original film, a black, lesbian high schooler (Adepero Oduye) is uncomfortable in the bar scene and frustrated at home. It's a coming-out film, but it breaks that mold by being thoroughly unpredictable. (M.B.)
Paris 36

Amid the social turmoil of 1936 France, the backstage crew tries to reopen a shuttered Paris music hall. The songs are sweet, the nostalgia mawkish. (K.B.)

Paris Does Strange Things (elena et les hommes)
Released: 0000
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Although the English dubbing hurts this film - Jean Renoir himself has said that, in more civilized times, "dubbers" would have been burned at he stake for presuming to put soul of one person into the body of another - it remains a charming, effervescent, thoroughly delightful comedy. It is Renoir's rumination on the notorious "Boulander Affair," that archetypal erotic-political scandal; and it features on of Ingrid Bergman's most sensual and amusingly seductive performances. Here is a comment on "Elena" by the brilliant French critic-director Jean-Luc Godard: "...If Elena' is the French filme par excellence, it is because it is the most intelligent film in the world. Art and at the same time the theory of art. Beauty and at the same time the secret of beauty...'Elena' is Renoir's most Mozartian film. Not so much in its exterior appearance, like "the Rules of the Game," but in its philosophy. The man who finishes 'French Can Can" and prepares for 'Elena' is, morally, a little like the man who completes the Concerto for Clarinet and launches into "The Magic Flute". In substance, the same irony and the same distaste. In form, the same audacity of simplicity. To the question, "What is Cinema?" "Elena" replies: 'More than cinema.'"

Love is the unifying theme in this anthology film, in which 18 teams of filmmakers were assigned to make a five- or six-minute narrative short about a separate Parisian neighborhood. They all go out of their way to avoid cliché, showing the Paris that other movies somehow missed. (K.V.)

After being double-crossed, a professional thief (Jason Statham) recruits an unlikely partner (Jennifer Lopez) to hijack his former crew's next big score. The story is an utter snooze, which is the kiss of death for a blood-and-guts action flick. (K.J.)
Parkland

Rated: PG-13

A variety of events surrounding President John F. Kennedy's assassination are reenacted, including his trip to Dallas' Parkland Hospital. Paul Giamatti is memorable as the man who films the murder, but the narrative doesn't provide enough perspective. (K.B.)
