MovieDescription
Passage To Marseilles
Released: 1944
Rated:
Now Playing? No
The escape of five patriotic convicts from Devil's Island, to battle the Nazis and Vichyites. This was a re-union, two years later, of the director, the writer, and much of the cast, of Casablanca; but it pales beside its predecessor -- both because of the incredibly convoluted structure (four flashbacks, all inside each other), and an apparent attempt to copy the poetic French movie fatalism of the late '30s...so reverent an attempt that it dries up all the wisecracks and vernacular. Still, a good, mood drenched WB film noir. (Too "noir", it seems, for its own good...)

A starchy, upper-crust, athletic phenom joins forces with a salty old coach; casting an appraising eye on her form, he remarks: "There isn't much meat on her, but what's here is, is choice." Close to the best of all the Tracy-Hepburn comedies; with a spry, witty script and nimble direction by the great Adam's Rib trio of Ruth Gordon, Garson Kanin and George Cukor.
Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid
Released: 1973
Rated:

Sam Peckinpah's own favorite among his work was this savage, gloomy retelling of the Billy the Kid legend - perhaps the most tragic of all his films. It's brilliantly cast, graced with an original Bob Dylan score (including "Knockin' on Heaven's Door), and suffused with fatalism. Unfortunately, it only circulates to a variety of butchered, reedited prints: Peckinpah reportedly stole the only complete version of his preferred cut after the studio refused to release it. But Sam was right: it is a great movie.

Patton
Released: 1970

Magisterial World War II bio of the Fifth Army's slightly wacko military genius - with a corrosive title performance by George C. Scott. The film has some historical significance. Richard Nixon screened it repeatedly before ordering the Cambodian invasion.

Nerds (Simon Pegg, Nick Frost) have a close encounter with an escaped alien (voiced by Seth Rogen) who needs their help. Pretty funny, this cavalcade of homages to 1970s and 1980s sci-fi is equal parts endearing, sloppy and overly ingratiating. (S.R.)

Pauline At The Beach
Released: 1983

The third, and by far the most popular, in Rohmer's "comedies and Proverbs" series. Another erotic roundelay is enacted, but this time at a shimmeringly lovely stretch of sea and sand, photographed by Nestor Almendros so that the gold of the beach glows against the pink of the lovers' flesh. Lovely, intelligent - a modern classic.

After a divorce, a lawyer (Catherine Keener) trundles her teenage kids to the upstate New York farmhouse of her mother (Jane Fonda), a dope-smoking, war-protesting hippie grandma. There's the potential for bracing intergenerational conflict, but director Bruce Beresford's dramedy is curiously bland. (K.B.)
Peaceful Warrior

An arrogant gymnastâ??s life is changed by an auto mechanic (Nick Nolte) who tutors him à la the Karate Kid. The film is a New Agey crowd-pleaser, but itâ??s boosted by breathtaking cinematography, strong performances and a genuine sense of mystery. (M.S.)
