Marjane Satrapi takes us through a turbulent period in Iran’s history in this largely autobiographical animated feature, an adaptation of her celebrated graphic novels. The movie follows Satrapi’s coming of age while also showing us the black veil that descended over Iran, and the result is both endearing and searing. (K.W.)

Two pentathletes have a lesbian affair, break apart and are then forced into competition. It sounds gamey, but ace scenarist Robert (Chinatown, Shampoo) Towne's directorial debut is a real surprise - one of the best American movies ever made about athletics.

Petulia
Released: 1968

The film opens with jagged, raw images of a very young Janis Joplin screaming the blues; the savage, bittersweet romance that follows, between a troubled surgeon and the wife of a rich young psychopath, is one of the key American movies of the '60s; deceptively offhand, mordant and powerful - San Francisco, through a glass, very darkly.

Demi (Ed Harris), nevertheless, agrees to leading one final mission aboard the B-67, a vessel which is soon to be sold to the Chinese navy. His orders: Start World War III and shift the blame to the Chinese. (TMS)
Phantom Lady
Released: 1944
Rated:
Now Playing? No
An innocent man languishes on Death Row facing execution for a murder he didn't commit, a murder for which his only alibi is a mysterious lady, an anonymous "pickup" who's vanished like a phantom in the night. Meanwhile his best girl and his best friend search desperately through the shadowy city of night, concrete and steel for the lady who seems not to exist, for a truth that is always elusive. This is one of the great '40s film noirs, based on one of Cornell Woolrich's "clock-race" thrillers (Rear Window, and Deadline At Dawn are two others) and directed with high Teutonic dash and bravura by Robert Slodmak. The demonic hepcat drum solo by Elisha Cook, Jr., alone is worth the price of admission.
