A veteran lawman (Jeff Bridges) and his new partner (Ryan Reynolds) uncover a dangerous tunnel to the afterlife while working for a police force charged with finding monstrous spirits disguised as ordinary people. The film's paint-by-numbers approach makes both the comedy and the drama fall flat. (M.B.)

A bizarre fusion of the '70s road movies with the Exorcist genre. For some reason, critic Robin Wood is quite fond of it.
Rachel Getting Married
Released: 2008
Rated: R

Directed by Jonathan Demme in a jittery hand-held style that would get the average wedding videographer fired, Rachel Getting Married is a family psychodrama about the ties that bind, and in both senses of the phrase it’s as enjoyable as hell. As Rachel, Rosemarie DeWitt has the radiant clarity of Helen Hunt, but it’s Anne Hathaway, as Rachel’s recovering-addict sister, who burns a hole in the screen, a cigarette wedged between her fingers like a tiny shotgun. (K.W.)

This documentary provides an entertaining and disturbing look at the history of suburban sprawl, focusing on one very divided family. The information is always revealing, and the climax will make you reconsider what goes on behind those two-car garage doors. (G.S.)

Based on E.L. Doctorow's novel, a crazy-quilt pageant of America in the Pre-World War I years. The characters include homey middle Americans, rebellious blacks. Harry Houdini and the three sides of the Thaw-White-Nesbit triangle in them, we see not just our ancestors but ourselves. Czech director Milos Forman has made from this novel the best American film of 1981. It's a gorgeous movie - a kaleidoscope of humor, pathos and terror.

An odd little comedy - both fey and surprisingly bitter - from Frank Capra's pre-It Happened One Night Columbia years. It shows a circus full of charming eccentrics (in some ways they prefigure the Vanderhof family in Capra's 1938 You Can' Take It With You) staving off the mercenary encroachment of a band of entrepreneurs intent on taking them over. Vaudevillians Joe Cook and Dave Chasen (later Chasen's Restaurant) contribute a number of their famous patter routines; the ending, suggests Elliott Stein, is a bleak, absurdist coda worthy of Samuel Beckett. Definitely out of the ordinary; a buff's delight.
