Rome: Open City
Released: 1945

Roberto Rossellini's "Rome: Open City" marks one of the major turning points in cinema history. Shot in the streets and houses of Rome in the waning days of World War II and Liberation (sometimes under the very noses of the occupying German armies) with a largely amateur cast, its great World-Wide success stimulated cinematic realism and independent production in every country where it was shown...Yet, if "Open City" retains its rough beauty and power 30 years later, it is not simply because of its innovations - which after all, had many precursors. It survives because of the indelible performances of its actors - most especially an ex-cabaret entertainer named Anna Magnani as the doomed young widow; its striking images of a people in turmoil; its conviction; its force' and, above all, its enormous integrity. "When Roberto shot this film," remarked co-worker Federico Fellini, "he had the sensitivity of an exposed definitive document of a convulsive and tragic epoch. The document survives because the genius of its makers - Rossellini, Magnani, Fellini, and the cast of dedicated amateurs - happened, at that time and place, and matched the passion and terror of their subject.

Franco Zeffirelli's voluptuous, wildly energetic version of Shakespeare's classic of doomed love among Verona's youth takes its cue from the line: "These hot days is the mad blood stirring." In contract to he many other moonstruck adaptations, this one is hot, Italianare, seething, gorgeous. The lovers are a pair of teenagers who all but tear each other's clothes off; the sword fights are raging, bloody; and every one of the Bard's dirty jokes - such as Mercutio's "The Bawdy hand of time is on the prick of shock; this is a post-West Side Story staging of Romeo and Juliet and it makes even West Side Story look chaste. But Zeffirelli, despite lapses of taste, is a master of staging; he makes it work.
