A teenager (Henry Hopper) manifests his residual issues over the death of his parents by serial-crashing memorial services of complete strangers and talking to the ghost of a Japanese kamikaze pilot (Ryo Kase). There’s a gentle appeal to many of the scenes between Hopper and new friend Mia Wasikowska, but there’s ultimately way too much focus on oddball details, making it hard for anything resembling recognizable human relationships to emerge. In Sam (American Beauty) Mendes’ cinematic adaptation of Richard Yates’ great American novel, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet are Frank and April Wheeler, artistic types trapped in mid-century suburbia, their marriage dissolving before their eyes. Both actors give it their best, but something important has been lost on the way from page to screen: Yates’ mercilessly omniscient narrator, who revealed not just what these two said but what they thought.
