An update of the old Bette Davis vehicle; and - despite longueurs (usually involving a group of dubious male "ingenues"), a worthy finale to George Cukor's splendid directorial career.
Rich and Strange
Released: 1932
Rated:

Alfred Hitchcock didn't begin to concentrate on thrillers until 1934 (with The Man Who Knew Too Much). Before that, he made a wide variety of films - and his favorite of all of them was this odd, brilliant, semi-fantastical little comedy-drama about an ordinary British couple plunged into an unlikely world cruise by an unexpected inheritance. As the backdrop grow more colorful the marriage disintegrates. The scenarist was Hitchcock's own wife, Alma Reville. Partially shot on location in Port Said, Colombo and Marseilles, Rich and Strange is unexpected , delightful and full of ideas.
