MovieDescription
Robin and the Seven Hoods
Released: 1964
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Frankie and the Clan (in their only real musical) play at being gangsters, a joke that doesn't seem so funny in retrospect.
Robin Hood
Released: 2010
Rated: PG-13
Now Playing? No
In Ridley Scott's film, Robin Hood (Russell Crowe) goes from loyal warrior to alienated, virtuous outlaw, Marion (Cate Blanchett) by his side. Too many extraneous characters make it muddled, and not enough action makes it dull. (K.B.)

Now Playing? No
Director José Padilha puts a modern spin on Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 action film about a murdered Detroit cop (Joel Kinnaman) who's reconstructed as a machine designed to bring order to a city on the verge of anarchy. Excellent sound work aside, this is a woefully bland version of the grim, überviolent original. (S.D.)

Robot & Frank
Released: 2012
Rated: PG-13
Now Playing? No
An aging cat burglar (Frank Langella) finds his zest for life renewed when he trains his robotic caretaker to help him commit heists. The film's combination of themes -- robots, crime, existential dilemmas -- is weird, but its script is pleasantly nuanced. (K.J.)
Robots

Visually enthralling, this digitally-animated feature is a runaway roller coaster, for better or worse
Rocco and His Brothers

Rock Around The Clock

The Birth of the Rock. I haven't seen this movie, but, hey, it doesn't even have to be good.
Rock Down Central America
Released: 1989
Rated: NR

Rock of Ages
Released: 2012
Rated: PG-13
Now Playing? No
The hair-metal songbook proves sturdy in this entertaining jukebox musical about young performers (Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta) trying to make it in L.A.'s rock scene circa 1987. The supporting performances are wonderful, especially that of Tom Cruise, who outdoes himself as a decadent front man. (K.B.)
Rock Star

Not since This Is Spinal Tap has heavy metal looked so silly
Rock-a-Bye Baby

Rocket Science
Released: 2007
Rated: R

In this coming-of-age comedy, a high-school kid (Reece Thompson) stutters so badly there’s nothing left to do but join the debate team. The wistful and the whimsical don’t always gel here, but it’s still a mordantly amusing look at the need to find one’s voice. (K.W.)
RocknRolla
Released: 2008
Rated: R

Director Guy Ritchie's convoluted latest, a sequel in spirit to his earlier London-gangster comedies, involves brutish mobsters, a femme fatale accountant, a stolen painting and a criminal savant with a taste for the films of Merchant/Ivory. The classic Ritchie tropes are present (the herky-jerky editing, the cartoon violence), and it's best to enjoy this for what it is, a fast-paced amoral joyride that's more interested in the absurdities of violent criminality than the complications of real life. (J.R.)
Rocky
Released: 1976
Rated: PG
Now Playing? No
Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), a small-time boxer from working-class Philadelphia, is arbitrarily chosen to take on the reigning world heavyweight champion, Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), when the undefeated fighter's scheduled opponent is injured. While training with feisty former bantamweight contender Mickey Goldmill (Burgess Meredith), Rocky tentatively begins a relationship with Adrian (Talia Shire), the wallflower sister of his meat-packer pal Paulie (Burt Young). (TMS)
Rocky Balboa
Released: 2006
Rated: PG
Now Playing? No
The aging boxer (Sylvester Stallone) gets another chance to fight the heavyweight champ. Despite some clunky melodrama, the movie is good, solid entertainment of the stand-up-and-cheer variety. (M.S.)
Rocky Horror Picture Show

Rocky III

Three strikes and out for the Italian Stallion. Slickest and quickest of the Rocky Balboa trilogy, but the paunch is beginning to show. (M.W.)

Two self-involved anti-heroes (Paul Rudd, Seann William Scott) are forced by court order to take part in a child-mentoring program, where they learn to care while providing guidance to a teenage nerd and an 8-year-old with the mouth of a David Mamet character. Beautifully cantankerous until Rudd and Scott actually start turning into role models. (J.R.)
