Sleepwalk With Me
Released: 2012
Rated: PG-13
Now Playing? No
A struggling comic (Mike Birbiglia) develops a sleepwalking problem after moving in with his girlfriend (Lauren Ambrose). Birbiglia’s wit sparkles in voiceovers, but his egocentrism often overshadows the other characters. (K.J.)

An urbane, witty and slightly psychotic mystery novelist with a passion for puzzles and games discovers that his wife is sleeping with a low-born hairdresser. He invites him over to his rococo mansion for a talk, a drink, a game or two - and it would be absolutely unsporting to reveal anything that happens next. A glittery thriller adapted by Anthony Shaffer from his stage hit and played to the hilt by the cast. (The game-obsessed host is said to be modeled on composer Stephen Sondheim. ) (M.W.)

In Kenneth Branagh’s misguided remake, an aging cuckold (Michael Caine) invites his wife’s young lover (Jude Law) to his mansion for a murderous battle of wits. Branagh’s camera stunts and manic energy suggest that he doesn’t trust his audience to sit still for a conversation. (J.R.)

I have a real soft spot for Allan Dwan - a talented director who, for years, had to work with the worst junk imaginable. This is one of his better pieces of material - an adaptation of James M. Cain's "Love's Lovely Counterfiet" - but it was also, in Dwan's words, a "handcuff job," with the censors perverting many of the scenes in the name of "decency"

Slumdog Millionaire

A young Mumbai striver (Dev Patel) survives the crushing poverty and daily tragedies of his birthplace and lands himself on the Hindi version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Like Mumbai, the mad, thrilling, perversely luminous Slumdog pulses and throbs with raw, unadulterated life. (M.S.)
Small Change
Released: 0000
Rated:

A gentle, multifaceted portrait of childhood by Francois Truffaut - not quite a return to the mood of The 400 Blows (it lacks some of the earlier film's tough, bittersweet qualities), but often reminiscent of it.

Alcoholism and failed marriage in show business - a microcosm of Capitalist decay. Scriptwriter John Howard Lawson pours on the dialectics; Susan Hayward pours on the sudsy emoting. The soap wins in a walk. (M.W.)

Smiles of A Summer's Night
Released: 1955
Rated:
Now Playing? No
One of the great erotic comedies involving a worldly actress, her inept lawyer-lover, his overly romantic son and impressionable young wife, a lusty servant girl, a jaded Don Juan and a fierce countess. Along with The Magic Flute, this is the most engaging and amusing of Bergman's films. But although it strives for the later film's Mozartian lightness and sublety, Smiles Of A Summer Night has an inner blackness, a bitterness, a caustic moralism that gives it a haunting intensity. It's as if a Fench boudoir farce by Feydeau had somehow been filtered through the sensibility of a Kierkegaard . Audiences at the time, however, didn't notice the dark undertones; they reveled in the sex and the laughs, and it was this film that first made Bergman an international success.

A mafioso (Jeremy Piven) is marked for death after striking a prosecution deal; enter the federal agents (Andy Garcia, Ray Liotta), the bail bondsmen (Ben Affleck), the attorneys (Jason Bateman) and myriad assassins. This Tarantino-style action film is partly plodding procedural fare, but the other part is enjoyably weird. (M.I.)
